Default How to tell if distributor is bad?

I am trying to figure out if my distributor needs to be replaced. The wires that are tucked behind the plastic cover behind the rotor have been melted/rubbed down, i took a pic to show what i mean. There was no plastic cover when i opened the dist up, and when i tried to put one it, it didnt fit right. Can i just replace the wires or do i need a whole new distributor? I tried a new rotor today, am getting a cap tomorrow, thanks for the help

If you still have your old ignitor and coil you can just swap em out and see if that does anything. As for the wires, can you solder some wires onto em?
