Sealant or no sealant on muffler gasket?
I have bought a replacement OEM muffler. Should I put sealant on the gasket like high temp copper whatever gasket maker? What would they do at Honda dealership if replacing the muffler? Sealant or no sealant (dry)? Thanks..just need a quick reply! Civic '98 DX D16Y7

No clue what's the "right way" but I'm chiming in because although I ALWAYS just use the donut gasket with no sealant they do make an exhaust pipe specific sealant. I saw it at the local parts store yesterday while looking for silicone grease.

I've read "Permatex 81878 Ultra Copper Maximum Temperature RTV Silicone Gasket Maker" people have used on this gasket. To keep it from leaking exhaust gas by "sealiung" is that the idea or why would I use this? But don't know if supposed to use it on this gasket.

The stuff I saw was Permatex 80335/V807.
"Seals holes and leaks in mufflers, tailpipes and around joints, makes new installations more secure and resists temperatures to 2,000°F (1,000°C)."
BUT I'm really thinking you're fine without using anything.

the gasket sound be fine if it's just a flat gasket for the axel back portion. I've used run of the mil RTV to seal up my cracked doughnut gasket in the past worked for me but that's because it was damaged.

I work at a service tech at a Honda dealer and we never use an type of sealant for exhaust gaskets. just the gaskets, we always try to use new gaskets but if your doesn't look bad it should be fine
