Worn Valve Guides??
I just picked up a first Gen B16 from HMO and I swaped it into my Crx Si. I thought It was pinging so I retarded the timing all the way and added 93 Octane. I noticed Today it still made the noise with out the throttle so I think It could either be a valve adjustment or worn valve Guides.
It Starts at 2500 and continues, sounds exactly like detanotion. I say valve Guides cause when I had the header off I notice #2 valves had a small indention on the valves at the bottom of the guides and were shiny siler unilke all the others being dark black. I planning to do an adjustment asap

Re: Worn Valve Guides?? (EH3B18B)
I highly doubt that the valve guides will cause a detonation sound. I also have a 1g B16 and from what I have seen they have issues with the LMA's(lost motion assemblies). They make a tapping sound that sounds similar to the valves needing adjusting. Sometimes the fuel injectors will also make a similar sound. I plan to upgrade to some GSR(Same as ITR) lma's. HTH

so true in the same boat about to change mine and add some bonus stuff while it is out
valve guides usually smoke
that is the way I tell if they are bad

no blue smoke indicates that engine oil is either being burnt or vaporized. it does not mean rings. a compression test and leak down test will show you what's going on.
I just did the stem seals on my buddies 90 turbo laser that was billowing like a train at 300k miles (yes stock block) cylinders 2 and 3 would pour oil out the exhaust ports from how bad the stem seals were. now it maybe burns a drop or two at high rpms but is billow free.
proof, oem on the left, super tech on the right:
back on topic.
o/p blindly retarding your engine and adding higher octane gas wont just solve the issue. re time it to where it should be, and ONLY run premium regardless, since it's a high compression motor.
that being said what ecu are you running?
