Default Oil change interval

hi,

I was just reading about the oil change myth and that it is not necessary to change the oil ever 3000 miles.

http://neptune.spacebears.com/....html
http://www.nordicgroup.us/oil.htm

When do you guys change the oil?

Thank You

only if you have a new Honda you can go 5000 miles between oil changes but other than that you should follow the factory recommendations trust me an oil change is a lot cheaper than a new motor.

a lotta bs in this thread so I will sort it out for you......

all honda that use Fuel injection and have aluminum blocks can go 7200 miles under normal conditions ON STRAIGHT UP DINO OIL

my 94 accord was 7200 miles oil change intervils
same for my 98 accord V6
My CLS can easily go 8K based upon SOS oil analysis.........but I drive 75% highway miles...........

newer hondas have an oil life meters and it is not uncommon for people to go 10K before oil change......

if you are constantly in stop and go traffic and live in a really hot or cold area, take frequent short trips, then cut the 7200 in half...

I change my oil evey 5-6K depending upon time of year...............

(this is what i was told so correct me if im wrong) if you use mobil one or Amsoil you can go 4000-5000, but is you go with shells or cheveron youll have to do 3000, depends on the quality.

Just run some regular oil with some Lucas Oil Stabilyzer in there with it. I live by that stuff, works real well.

I change my oil twice a year, after winter, and after summer.

The amount you change your oil is up to you, but generally it will keep it's integrity alot longer than the recommended 3000 miles. How often you change it also depends on your driving style and the climate you live in. Synthetic oil will last longer than conventional oil. However, you can still get impurities in your oil so you may want to still change it at your regular intervals. Basically, if you went to walmart and got the cheap walmart oil and oil filter and changed your oil regularly, it would probably do as well as any other oil.

WoW, your engine compartment must wreak of burnt oil if you only change it twice a year. How often do you drive the car? I would love to see what the inside of your valve cover looks like.

I couldn't go more than 5k between changes when I was using 100% Synth AMSOil. I couldn't stand the smell of it when it got that old.

I drive my car at most 4000 miles a year, so I'm changing it about every 2000 miles. I just read this recently, it's about this exact question.

http://www.popsci.com/earthtal...r-oil

I don't know if all of that is absolutely true, but it's interesting either way.

I change mine every 3,500 miles. I want my engine to last. I know it might be able to go longer, but I want my car to last a long long time.

I change mine every 4,000 to 5,000 miles, or every six months (whichever comes first) with Castrol GTX. New filter (Honda OEM) each time of course.

For what it's worth, the owner's manul of my '99 LX says to change the oil every 7,500 miles or 12 months, and to change the filter every 15,000 miles or 12 months, under normal conditions.

For severe conditions, it says to replace the oil and filter every 3,750 miles or 6 months.

I am sure we are changing our oil more often than necessary but my wife changes her Accord every 3000 miles. It is just turning over 300,000 and burns about 1/2qt over 3000 miles and gets 33mpg. I was less successful on my two Landcruisers using synthetic every 7500 miles. The engines were losing power and consuming more oil after 200,000+mi. After watching her for 10+years I going along with her belief.

I change around 7k-10k (try to keep it closer to 7k). I use either penzoil fully synth or mobile 1 with a bosch filter (same as purolator pureone), p. pureone, or mobile 1.....I do this with all three family vehicles (one of them has had 100k since I have done this), and I have no worries....I came to this conclusion based on bobstheoilguy forums where a bunch of people send their oil in for lab tests.

This thread reminded me to change my oil lol. Just came back from walmart and they have penzoil platinum fully synthetic for $25 but has a $5off coupon tied to the cap then has a $10 gas card rebate. Then I went to kmart and bought a pureone filter for $6, they didnt have a booklet but luckily I knew the part number (typically shity kmart lol).

$16 for a fully synthetic oil change with good filter not too bad

Yea, pennzoil must be running some sort of special. I saw carquest has the quarts of pennzoil plat on sale for $3.99 (so $19.95 for 5, about the same as the walmart jug) with the $10 mail in gas card.

Service manual for my EM2 says oil every 10K and filter every 20K or yearly for normal conditions. Service manual for my 2005 Odyssey says every year regardless of what the maintenance display says. That being said, I change the oil and filter in both every 3000-5000 miles.

I change every 10,000+ and use Mobil 1; per my UOAs anything more frequent than that is a complete waste of time and money.
