So the time has come to replace/upgrade the clutch in my 2005 ep3. I ordered a CC stage 1.5 clutch, a lightweight flywheel, a ss clutch line, and the ESMM inserts.

I called one shop for a quote, and they said the clutch install would cost $480, because they would have to remove the subframe to get to the transmission. Is that true?

Is $480 too much to pay for labor? Should I keep shopping around for quotes?

I paid $320 in labor to replace my clutch and resurface the flywheel about a year ago.

How about this, gather up some tools, jacks, and jack stands and a buddy and do it yourself.

I had mine done for $200 , about 2 hours in labor to remove and install a/c line , tranny mount, cables, axels, removal of air box, battery and tray,end links on sway bar and refill tranny oil and subframe. One hour labor charge to take out tranny and remove clutch and reinstall and new parts and reinstall tranny. So about three hours total plus they round it up for the extra hand on removing and putting subframe back on. So labor rate times 4 hours. Also be aware if shop hasn't done a k series motor mounts on passenger side will bust if engine not supported.

Clutch installs are usually always high because you have to take the transmission out which is a pain in the ***. Installing the actual clutch and flywheel is literally the easiest part, and yes you have to remove the subframe.

Like someone else said, you should get a friend who knows how to do it to help you. It really is easy, its just very time consuming. Put aside a weekend to do it. You will save a whole lot of money doing it yourself.

I found a shop to install everything for $300. At that price I decided to let the professionals handle the installation.

I am replacing the brakes soon (new rotors, pads and lines), and that's a project I'll do myself.

I got ripped off I paid around $400.. I had a buddy willing to do it for $200 but I didn't trust him.. I regret it.

serious bump, andy. what part of SC ya in? I'm in the Upstate and looking for a shop to do it as it took 2 days the last time and I really don't know what I did with my repair manual. $300 is not bad. what shop?

I'm not in SC anymore, and I'm not in the Honda game anymore either. I sold my EP3 and bought a 1988 325is (E30). I just finished upgrading the suspension (billy sports, h&r springs, poly bushings, etc.), and am now sourcing a few more parts for a S50 swap. I've already got the engine and tranny, but I just need a few more small things before I get underway.

Anyways, I used CPR Performance for the clutch and flywheel installation:
