Default 91 civic hatch fuel pump.... Need help ASAP

I need to replace my fuel pump in my 1991 civic STD hatchback. I just figured out that the fuel pump is accessible from under the back seat. Everyone tells me i have to drop the tank to change the fuel pump. We'll......

For 1- Is this true?

For 2- Me and my father in-law just change a fuel pump in a dodge dakota and we just cut a hole in the bed of the truck. Couldn't i just do that?

For 3- If i can do number two, where is the fuel pump exactly?

yes this is true, i did mine and i undid the straps that hold it up in the back and let it hang down it was kind of a pain to do because of the tight working area it would be much easier dropping the whole tank but i didnt want to do the extra work, i also recommend un-hooking supply and return lines that lead to the pump before dropping tank, the pump access plate is on the drivers side on the rear of the tank

I would rather create a "door" for it. If I'm sitting in the truck where would it be?

not sure exactly where it would be looking down on the tank from inside but if its something your committed to doing id just get under the car feel where the fp plate is at on the top of the tank its at and drill a hole or 2 from inside the car locate it and go from there, sounds like a good idea to me

you will have to drop it, creating a door for it will do you know good. theres a lot of lines in the way, i cant really explain it, i can just tell you that its easier to drop it. ive dropped my tank many many times. while youre in there get a fuel strainer too.

NOTE: The correct fuel strainer for a ef hatch is part # FS121. brand is giong to be airtex and you can get this from your local Advanced Auto. I went through many "oem replacement" fuel strainers before a fellow member help me figure this out. dont buy the one they say it is, because its not the correct one.

I had this same issue. I first bought a new main relay due to my previous one being shot. Once I did this, it was reading a code #15 (ignition output). I narrowed it down to the fuel pump to then figure out my fuel pump strainer was clogged completely. I dropped the tank, replaced the strainer, flushed the tank, then put new gas in it. It turned over 1st click and it runs as good as it did when we bought it new.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but "91redrocket" can you please comment on my current topic thread?? I currently have issues with:

Code 15
Occasional no-start
consistent hesitation (feels like insufficient fuel supply)

I just want to confirm how a code 15 can actually be caused by low fuel pressure...sounds weird. btw, previous owners have already replaced distributor, rotor, cap, plugs, wires, and fuel pump/filter...still had issues and they both gave up and sold it to me. lol
