99 Civic DX - speedometer and odometer intermittently not working
i have a 99 civic DX with a 97 ex cluster i was wondering sometimes i drive and the MPH needle would drop to 0 and it wouldn't work everything else would like the rmps would work the only thing that wouldn't work is the MPH needle and the odometer would stop working too until the needle started to work again anyone know what this means?

Re: Ek cluster not working
if the MPH is not working the VSS is bad not the cluster, change the speed sensor its on top of the tranny in the back near rear mount. and yes the odometer would not work if MPH doesn't, its not registering the car moving.

Are you getting any cel's?
My friends integra had a bad vss, it would sometimes jump around, sometimes wouldnt go anywhere.
Mark11017-what you said is simply untrue. Just becasue the speedo doesnt work doesnt mean it isnt the cluster. They do go out sometimes.
Do you still have the dx cluster? If so, put back in and see if the problem goes away. If it does, you can simply swap the dx speedo into the ex cluster. But be careful with those needles, some times the break.

Re: 99 Civic DX - speedometer and odometer intermittently not working
the odometer will only work if the speedometer is working, they tie into each other.
So speedo dead, odometer dead.

Re: 99 Civic DX - speedometer and odometer intermittently not working
There was a TSB for this, I hope someone can post the link.
Basically the wires under the intake manifold were poorly wrapped and they tend to rub against it and cause a short. I was getting the exact same problem in my 1999 Dx. I tried many clusters with no avail. I purchased a used engine harness with new electrical tape and loom; the problem never came back.

Re: 99 Civic DX - speedometer and odometer intermittently not working
Have you check inside the speed sensor for moister or oil buildup? my auto was fully of tranny fluid after my swap and was causing the spedo to not work. buddy of mine had his fuild of some kinda gunk on his 5-spd but he found the sensor in a car with no hood in the junk yard. just my two cents.
