Icon3 2000 Honda Civic Chugging (Codes: P0300, P1399, P0170)

Desperately need help everyone. I have a 2000 Honda Civic EX. The Check Engine Light came on about a year ago, and the car has been sluggish and chugging ever since.

I went to Autozone. The error codes are:

P0300 Random Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
P0301 - P304: Cylinder misfires
P1399: Manufacturer control ignition system or misfire
P0170: Fuel Trim malfunction (Bank 1)

I have changed the O2 sensor to a brand new bosch one. I have also changed the spark plugs but I don't think they were quality spark plugs. Please advise me on what to do. If there is anyone in the Charlotte/Gastonia area that could help me, I would appreciate that as well!

Whens the last time you've done a full tune up? Plugs (NGK or Denso), Plug wires (Honda or NGK), distributor cap, rotor and fuel filter? If they've never been done you might want to start there. For that light to be on its possible you could have done more damage especially to your catalytic converter although it doesn't seem that any of those codes indicate that. You can also check and troubleshoot your ignition system before you do the tune up to diagnose any other issues:

Heres the link to do the tune up:

Honestly I'd stay away from the Botched (Bosch) O2 and use a denso unit you can get from Amazon for around $65.

Hey,

I don't think I've ever done a full-tune up to this car. I bought it from a used dealership 3-4 years ago.

Unfortunately, I have to put a lot of hours in my job. How long do you think a full tune-up would take for a person that has not done a full-tune up on a car before and would be relying just mainly on pictures?

HondaPartsHero - would you be willing to do this for me if you were compensated? Not sure what your availability is or if you are even up for it.

The car feels like it's dying on me. It's been chugging worse and worse now, and died on me a few times recently (luckily, I was able to get start it back up a few minutes later).

Regarding the Bosch 02 sensor, crap I already had it installed 2 weeks ago, since a friend insisted that that I buy it and he installed it. Are you saying that it's defective?

Probably not defective but I've never had any long term success out of them. Do you know if he did a universal O2 or was it plug and play? Could also be your valve cover gasket is leaking causing the misfire codes as well. When you did the plugs was there any oil on top of them where the plug wire connects to the plug? I'll actually be out of town on vacation most of this week but if you have another way around I can see what I can do the week after this one.

It was a plug and play O2 sensor. It cost me roughly $80 after coupons from Autozone.

When I did the plugs, I don't honestly remember if there was any oil on top of them.

In regards to next week, I can arrange to have another way around. Should I go ahead and start buying the tune-up parts on Ebay so that they come in time? Really appreciate your help. Thanks again. Those links are also helpful in understanding the honda/acura ignition system.

Here's a link to place I get it from. $87 bucks for cap, rotor, plugs and wires, OEM Honda plus free shipping and you get a free oil filter. Can't go wrong with that deal. For a fuel filter I'd just get one local from Advance or Autozone. In the mean time pull the plug wires out one at a time and see if there is any oil in the tube well if there is you probably want to get a valve cover gasket set as well locally.

In a worse case scenario you could have a bad distributor but $100 dollars in parts is better than spending 200+ for a distributor if it fixes the problem. BTW how many miles are on the car?

There is 205,000 miles on the car. I am going to go ahead and place an order for the items you just mentioned.

I'll let you know when the items come in. If you can let me know your availability next week when you know it, that would be great. (I've PMed you my number).

In the meantime, I'll start plugging the wires to see if there is any oil.

Know of any cheap place to buy a distributor just in case we need one?

Anything is possible, I could do a compression check real quick one day if you wanna run it by that would let you know if its worth doing the rest before you buy anything, I'm leaving on Monday later so if you could come by between 3 and 7 I could just check

Yeah, seems like for new members, you have a limit of 3 PMs. I'm going to delete them as I receive them in that case.
