Main Relay Replacement - 1989 Accord LX
I want to replace the main relay on my carbureted 1989 Accord LX. However, I'm given 3 choices for parts...
1. Fuel Injection Relay
2. Fuel Injection Pump Relay
3. Fuel Pump Relay
Which one do I want to replace my main relay? Do I want just one, 2, or all 3? The fuel injection words threw me off because the car is carbureted but they are still listed as parts for this model.
Thanks for any help!!!

Re: Main Relay Replacement - 1989 Accord LX
Step back for a second......Why do you want to do this? An 89 LX is carb'd and does not have the issues with Fuel Pump relays.....I happen to play with a few 3rd gen carb'd models. Personally have NEVER replaced a fuel pump relay on one of them....the FI (LXi's), now that is a different story.
So, since the fuel pumps on these are "stupid easy" to get to. How about a little more info. Why do you think there is an issue with power to the fuel pump?

Re: Main Relay Replacement - 1989 Accord LX
I'm far from an expert on any of this. The vehicle is a carburated 1989 Honda Accord LX. The car started "burping" for a split second while driving. It won't do it until it's hot and only every 5 or so miles. Never does it while ideling. It's so quick... just a split second. All the gages don't even move at all because of it. It's like a mini miss fire or something.
I'm thinking an electrical ignition problem. I replaced all the plugs and distributor with no luck. Wires, cap, and rotor all seem good. I'm going to replace the ignition switch. Coil has good spark but I'll probably replace that too if the switch doesn't fix it. I read some old posts on a bad "main relay" having very similar symptoms so I wanted to replace that as well. The three I mentioned in my first post all were listed as parts for the 89 LX model and the words "fuel injection" really threw me. I just didn't know which one is the one I would want for the "main relay"...?
Like I said, I'm no expert and never even heard of a car relay before this. The car only has 95k on all original motor and is in good shape so I would like to maintain it as best I can.
Thanks for the reply and any help!

Personally, don't replace the switch...and I don't think the coil is the issue.....you'd see the tach jump if it was giving issues.....one of the wires from the coil drives the tach (BLU if memory serves me).
There are two fuel filters on these. One is in the back, pull the rear left/drivers tire. You'll see it in a small "cage". The other is under the hood....about where the hose goes over the brake booster.
Is this an auto? If so does this "skip/miss" happen while going ~45 mph?
EDIT: and also notice how I post nothing about the fuel pump relay....you have to remember this is a carb, so there is enough fuel in the fuel bowl inside the carb for it to run for at least two minutes before it would go dry and die.

The skip or buck happens at just about any speed. It's a manual 5 speed. Does not happen until the motor is hot. I replaced the fuel filter under the hood last year but not the other. I can replace both of those and se if that fixes it. Any other ideas if that's not it? Thanks for the info on the relay. Like I said, I'm not expert so I'm glad nice folks like you help me out greatly when it comes to these things.

I re-read you description, the cap and rotor have not been replaced, you just got the car so you don't know if they have been replaced or when...So as part of regular maint I would replace those, test the wires.

Okay. I'll pick up a new cap and rotor and might even pick up another set of wires and see what happens. I'll update after that. Thanks!

Just because I reported myself in the post below, YES I REPORTED MYSELF, your other post got moved.

In this are the testing procedures you need for the switch and module.....again, if you want to continue this on the "other" site let me know....I thought sponsors would pay based upon active member count but I guess that doesn't matter here.
