Default Car wont turn off?!

Hey guys, I have a 98 Honda Civic EK Hatch 5 Speed Converted. I came across a problem the other day. I went to turn my car off like normal, and pulled my keys out, and my car didnt shut off, even after my keys were out of the ignition, the car could still be driven away. I immediately bought a new ignition switch because i was almost positive this was the problem. I installed it and nothing changed. My car will still not turn off without stalling it or taking the battery terminals off. Im not sure if this is caused by a short in my wiring harness or what? But if anyone on here can help me figure this out, it'd be much appreciated!

How do you start the engine after you have turned it off?

I hook the battery terminals back up and start it just like normal. It starts fine, but when i turn the key off and take it out, the battery light and oil light stay on and the check engine light goes off, and the car remains running.

Sounds like a classic case of bad ignition switch. Did you install a brand new ignition switch or a used one? Have the wires in the ignition switch connectors been tampered with?

Starter has nothing to do with this diagnostic, not even close.

Are you talking ignition switch, or lock cylinder, there is a big difference, being the lock cylinder is for the keys, and the ignition switch contains the actual electronic switches, just for clarification.

What was the last thing done to the car before this started happening? I've seen quite a few people install aftermarket accessories, not just remote starts and security, to the IGN circuit for power.

That ignition switch test is very good, rule that out first, if not that, I would inspect the under dash area for wires that do not belong.

It's definately not the ignition lock because I just installed that brand new. However. Today I went out to start my car and my instrument cluster and climate control lights started flickering along with a burnt smell coming from my heater vents.. after.this happened, I turned my key off and my car actually shut off. I turned it off and in a few times and it tutned off everytimE. Its now parked in my garage .. what do you guys think? Instument wire harness short maybe?

if the ignition is brand new/replaced then it definitely sounds like an electrical short. If you could, you should test the electricity going from the ignition switch.

Like I had said before, did you replace the lock cylinder, or the ignition switch, they are two separate parts. Seeming as you have smoke from the vents, the plastic housing that holds the ignition switch has melted, along with the solder.

Again, did you replace the part where the key goes, or the big black switch on the back of it. If you did not disconnect several large gauge connectors from under the dash, and the replacement part did not have about a foot and a half or more of harness on it, you did not replace the ignition switch.
