Default Valve adjustment on 1998 Honda Civic Ex

I need to do the valve adjustments on my Civic. Never had it done, and have 80K miles on the engine. I notice during the cold mornings I get tapping, which goes away for the most part, but you can still barely hear it after warm up. Anyways, I found this writeup:

Is this the correct specs for a 1998 Honda Civic EX? Also, how do you know that you are perfectly 180 degrees off when you turn the crank counterclockwise? Thanks again!

those specs are right. as for knowing if your 180 degrees, just turn the crank half a turn (180) and see if the cylinder your doing next has all the valves closed and you can wiggle the rocker arm just a bit for that cylinder

Thanks! Also, there are four valves per cylinder, right?

Adjusting the valve clearance is a good idea, but also make sure the engine is topped off with oil and that a good oil filter that does not allow oil to drain from the head to the oil pan is installed.

Also, since the specs are like .007 - .009 should I go with .008 or stick with the .007? Thanks!

he makes it look so difficult wrestling with that wrench around his screwdriver while hes adjusting. i loosen them enough to move the screw easily and adjust both valves.then when i do to tighten it i put the wrench back on with the screw driver. mark the pulley and every 90 turn is the next cycle in order like so 1-3-4-2. thier should be a slight drag on ur feeler gauge. make sure the engine is cold when u do this. yes .009 and .007 are the tightest specs to go

ill usually drop a long handled screwdriver into the plug hole. you know you are at tdc when you are slowing moving the crank and the screwdriver has stopped moving up but not started moving down.

also over the years ive found that the quickest way is to put the feeler gauge in between, tighten the nut all the way till you can not pull the gauge out, then back it off usually somewhere around 1/16 to 1/8th of a turn and thats close to the specs you need.

good luck and stretch out, my back always bothers me after this from being bent over the car for a while(or maybe it does cuz im getting old...)

sounds more like piston slap since it goes away when it gets warmed up. If it was your valves it would do it all the time. Mine does the same thing and only does it during winter months so just make sure the oil is good and use a filter that has a bypass valve which most filters today do.
