Default Loud metal to metal sound on intial engine start in cold weather.

I have a D16Y7 automatic. Weather was a "cold for California" 45F or so. When I started, I heard what sounded like cylinders firing without oil. CLakaclakaclaka then went away. Honestly it was less then maybe a quarter of a second.

Does anyone else experience this in the morning after the car sits overnight? And a noob question, but when you put the engine into ON from Accessory w/o starting the car, does any oil at all squirt onto the block to prep the engine for initial startup?

Engine background: some 207K miles and engine oil changed religiously every 3K and checked level every week.

No oil is moved until you crank the engine, the only thing primed when the key is turned to the "on" position is the fuel pump

Pretty common in every Honda I've had experience with. It's a combo of typical 4cyl piston slap and the oil being a little sluggish when cold.

Damn, I wish 45°F was considered cold here.

It could also be the starter grinding on the flywheel, mine did that today. Just throwing that out there, if you can narrow it down to that?

I'd put my money on cylinder slap. Not really a huge issue; most Hondas do it. My Civic GSR and my Corolla both do it when it's under like 40 degrees out on the first start of the day. It's not like it's a continuous knock. If it were, then it would warrant a concern.
