Default Timing belt & water pump replacement brand recommendations

Hey everyone,

I'm just turning over 110,000 miles on my 2005 Civic Hx (5 speed). I was thinking that now would be a good time to change the timing belt and water pump from what people have told me (and glancing through the manual).

I have a mechanic that lives up the road who told me to buy the parts and he'd help me do it. I glanced around but haven't been able to definitively decide the best way or best brands to purchase. Since this is an important aspect of the car, obviously, I figured I should ask around before I jump into it.

I checked the FAQ section for the replacement. Anyone else have any general suggestions for the process or any other things to look at while we're at it?

Thanks!

Buy an OEM kit on Ebay from an online OEM dealer. The kit should include the timing belt, alternator-a/c belt, PS belt, water pump, valve cover gasket and spark plug tube gaskets. There is one on Ebay now for $120 total. If you want, compare the price to buying each part individually via www.bkhondaparts.com.

I am frugal and do not always go OEM, but in my experience, OEM for these parts will pay for itself in longevity and peace of mind.

I do not change the tensioner on the first TB change.

There are OEM parts distributors listed at the bottom of the FAQ's thread. I'd strongly recommend going with OEM replacements on parts that critical to the engine's function.

+2... there's certain things that my Honda's have been finicky about being replaced with non-OEM stuff. I wouldn't risk it, especially with all the labor involved. I could just see having to go back in and replace the water pump after finding out it was inferior.

I can verify to OEM. I bout a duralast alternator because I'm planning on ditching my car soon. I had to dremel the upper mount because there tolerance on there part is greater then Hondas. Go OEM. Unless your car isn't worth it.
