Default Re-Doing A Headliner, What Adhesive to Use?

My headliner is slowly getting worse and worse everyday so I decided that I should do something about it. It's a 96 civic ex. The thing is, I am unsure about which adhesive to use. I have found that these four (thanks to research and this thread) have been getting good reviews:

DAP Weldwood Spray Adhesive ( http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/DAP-W...ehicleQ5fParts )

3M 08090 Super Trim Adhesive ( http://www.handsontools.com/3M-08090...l_p_10289.html )

Loctite 37312 - Loctite Maximum Strength Headliner Adhesive ( http://www.summitracing.com/parts/LCT-37312/ )

and Automotive Headliner Adhesive Glue ( http://stockinteriors.com/headlinera...10&ModelId=233 )

Which one did you guys use? Also, did you guys strip the headliner to bare cardboard? Or did you just remove the old fabric or did you just put the new material over it?

Either the 3M or Automotive Headliner Glue will work fine. I use 3M Super 77 for upholstery applications and it works fine.

I've used 3m plenty of times with no bad experiences.

I used some permatex stuff in an orange can and it sucked. I followed the instructions and it started sagging within a couple months.

I heard not to use 3m Super 77 or such for headliners...but after hearing it's what other people used successfully...I thought about redoing mine and took it out...but it's not a priority.

Sure, but does anyone here buy lawn edging for their lawn? Or rubber plumbing couplers for their drains? Come on, we're building Civics, not rockets...unless we build a Civic powered rocket!

i don't really understand what you're getting at... :\

loctite will definitely last through extreme weather conditions because it was designed to deal with them. will the 3m multipurpose? maybe, probably, who knows.

I'm saying that there are plenty of things people use for things other than the intended purpose, and it's fine. It works. Loctite stuff will probably hold. Just from my knowledge, doing my own headliner and a friend using one bottle of the stuff I used and one bottle of Super 77 on her car, the Permatex stuff failed for both of us, but the 3m Super 77 held.

For something decorative, there's no reason to be all uptight. If we were talking assembly lubes or fasteners for suspension or whatever, we can get into all the little details. But for a headliner or whatever, I figure that whatever works works.

Great to see such a discussion on this topic.

My friend has used 3m Super 77 and the heat down here in the southwest just gets to it and makes it sag.

I asked around at a few upholstery shops and they told me that they use: DAP Weldwood HHR Contact Cement ( http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...=STRK:MEWAX:IT) and spray it on with an actual spray gun. But I rather not have to buy a compressor and spray gun, that's why I am mainly looking at aerosol sprays.

At the moment, I am really leaning towards the Loctite Headliner Spray since there has been multiple good reviews on here and via google. To those that have used the Loctite Headliner Spray, how long has your headliner lasted and does your car go through variable weather changes or does it mostly stay in the garage?

So, when you guys place the new fabric on, do you take off the old foam or fabric? Or do you just lay it right on?

i put it on over top the old fabric.. it doesn't make it thick enough to cause any problems with reinstallation. plus, you get to keep the old, soft OEM feeling.

i'll get back to you after this winter about whether or not it holds but i have a feeling it will. be careful when you install... once it becomes tacky, that sucker will take hold
