Default $800 AC Compressor replacement??

Just took my 91 Si in because it was not cooling too well. Thought it was just low on freon. The shop tells me the compressor is leaking and needs to be replaced. $800 damn dollars. Jeezus. He said it was a $350 part and the rest was labor and freon.

My tech question is how hard is it to replace it myself and just get it recharged from him? I see majestic has the part for $320 (I have found cheaper on the internet too). How difficult is it to replace the compressor myself? Looking through the helms it doesn't seem like its too difficult, but I wanted to ask before I flock it up to save a couple hundred bucks.

Is the part from majestic going to be new, or reman also?

thanks

not very hard at all since all that you have to remove are 4 bolts,2 ac hoses and the ac belt...you can probably find a used one for cheap on the marketplace or craigslist or just buy a new aftermarket one from vatozone...!!!

Yea, do it yourself. Should not cost nearly that much. I bought a whole A/c system for 300 and installed it in my car without a hitch.

Make sure you recover your old refrigerant first.

Yea definitely don't pay $800 just to have them change a compressor, you can get them re manufactured for less than $200 on eBay, although those have a shorter warranty. Just make sure you get the proper model (i.e. Matsushita or Sanden) to replace yours. Oh and you may need to convert your car to r134 if its not already

I paid $130 on Ebay for a BNIB compressor.

You'll need to pull a vaccum before charging the system with new refrigerant.
Also replace the dryer.

Good advice Jaime
Ya bro i second this, not sure if your aware of service on ac but def pull vaccum, this will tell you if you have leaks before you go and fill the system with freon as well as prep it for freon. Then fill it up and your gunna be chillin!! replace all orings too take your time putting things together.. good luck!

Bringing back my old thread. Getting ready to tackle the job. One question maybe someone will know while I am bored at this hour or I could just call the shop I took it to and ask them in the morning. I really want to get going right at sun up though.

Since my compressor has a crack in it and I was told all the coolant leaks right out, do I still need to take it back to him (or rent the machine from autozone) before I start and have it evacuated? I feel like I need to still get it all out. Which is correct?

Thanks

if there is zero coolant in the system then just take it apart. LEGALLY i am required to tell you it is illegal to vent that stuff to the ozone... lol but seriously if you're concerned about it take off one of the caps from one of the fill valves, and press the schrader valve in for a sec. if a whole bunch of freon comes spraying out have it evacuated. if nothing just tear it apart.

A/C systems use refrigerant not coolant.

I thought the names might have been interchangeable with AC. I just used coolant because a FAQ I was reading mentioned to drain the AC system of all the coolant. Obviously I would put in freon, and not coolant.

Im in a similar situation. Are all d series compressors interchangable?

And are there any other reasons the a/c wont work? My a/c button doesnt light up, will that cause any failures?

I had the same problem, it ended up being just a fuse.

I would look into buying a compressor on ebay. I paid 200$ for a sandan compressor. then pull a vacuum.

Last don't convert it to R134 you will be very disappointed. Its not cold at all in a CRX. The system is already fairly weak. I'd have to drive for an hour at highway speeds @ 4k rpm with the system on full blast to get remotely cool. (when I was on R134)
