Check out the All motor LS non vtec thread in the all motor section. Non vtec FTW! lol. In short though, the head flows like crap so thats where your going to have to spend most of your time/money to make power. Cams, higher comp, and everything else follow. Would say get a short geared tranny like a b16 but your long commute would say no to that lol. Maybe a gsr tranny though?

doing the LS/VTEC head swap will require alot of research. the LS/V motor needs to be built correctly for them to last. but they are good motors and LS blocks are cheap if anything goes wrong.
and also it's V-TEC/VTEC not VTECH (people get mad about it)

The first option would be to swap a VTEC head. In order to do this, you have to do a little research because it isn't a straight-forward procedure. Also, a set of ARP rod bolts is all but required when building an LS/VTEC unless you don't plan to increase the redline from what the LS did factory. This is where most people have issues with reliability. With the cost of the head and the LS/VTEC kit, this would be $800-1000 from start to finish.
Boost is another good option albeit the more expensive one. A simple turbo setup on your stock LS is good for 250-300whp without building the engine. Any more than that, you may consider a piston/rod build. If this options sounds intriguing, check out the Forced Induction forum and the FAQ. This option would probably run between $2-3000+

LS turbo will be the best bang for your buck, but will also be the least reliable.
Same for LS/VTEC, unless you build it right, then it starts to get a little expensive. If you half *** a LS/VTEC setup it doesn't make any more power than a GSR swap, and a stock GSR is wayyy more reliable.
I would try something like this.

maybe not exactly like that, because that setup would prob be a little pricey also. But a semi-built N/A LS is not a bad way to go.
Just food for thought

more octane might not show up on the dyno without more compression.........maybe if it were 100 octane or higher......but gas from the pump wont matter. cams......definitely help.
