Default Can I polish/wax rustoleum or does it ruin it?

I have a civic EG with a rustoleum paint job and although it looks alright straight from the gun (mixed with cellulose thinners) im wondering if I can compound/polish/wax it or whether it will make the paint work patchy?

Heres the car, you can see a few painting lines on the hood/bonnet. Can these be compounded out?

IDK about flat black, but I polished/waxed my gloss white with no problems

You can wetsand the lines with 1000 grit.

But compound and wax wont work on a flat/matte finish. The paint particles aren't fine enough. I tried.

Thanks for the replies, I have some 1000, 1200 and 1500 grit so i'll give that a go.

Ive just resprayed the bumper and my dog managed to scratch it. I just used a bit of rubbing compound on a wet rag and managed to get the scratch out. It looks like it hasnt damaged the surface or maybe I got lucky. I painted a CRX gloss black and I could never get an even finish. I really try and concentrate on getting it right straight from the gun but that means lots of prep which of course is the most important part.

I forgot to say the colour is actually satin black not flat black.

Heres a youtube vid of the spraying you guys might like to see. It shows the paint I used which I believe has the same properties as rustoleum. In the UK its called hammerite

Man, I love satin black. That looks Road Warrior tough. Dig it.
What was your paint to thinner ratio?

Are you wanting to polish and wax it because it's losing
something? How is it holding up?

The more I look at it, the more I love it.

Cheers, it was easier getting hold of satin black here in the UK than flat black. I didnt have a strict mixing ratio I just did it by eye and feel. I laid it on thick to begin with then thinned it out as I got towards the end. It tough paint so its holding up quite well and should hold the rust back a bit better than the standard paint plus for me its way easier to spray than the new (ish) water based paints. I just wanted to seal the paint somehow so not sure whether to wax or polish but might test some of the rubbing compound on a bigger section before deciding whether to flat the whole lot back or not.

Heres some more shots that I dont think were in the youtube vid...

try taking a rag and scrubbing it hard with paint thinner or what ever you used to thin your rustoleum

Most of the masking tape is on the window rubbers/seals. Do you reckon the thinners (cellulose) damage the rubber?

Yeah, I've messed with Rustoleum before. It's definitely a tough
paint. The satin black looks the best to me without any wet sanding
or polishing. I've used semi-gloss black before with good results..
but now I'd go for the satin.

I did an '89 Sentra Sport Coupe (Sunny Coupe for you guys on the other
side of the pond) with Rustoleum in '07 and it still looks like that day
I painted it. It was just an experiment after reading the $50 paint
job but I left it like that.

I found if I sand the paint with even 800-1000grit or even 1200 grit I get scratches left behind and being satin black I cant compound or polish them out without making one area look shinier than the other. I think I have to concentrate getting it right out of the gun.

I met someone the other day who has a friend with a matt black car and he vouched for the WD40 thing so might give it a try on one of the panels.

Ive just replaced the rubbing strips and sanded the whole car once more (mainly due to rust on the rear arches) so I shall be spraying again soon and hoping for a flawless finish 2nd time around.
