I'm just asking because I'm traditionally an american motor guy, and as you all know american motors have torque and you can short shift the hell out of them. I'm not quite used to running the gears out probably as far as they should be.

So what rpm do you guys shift at when just scooting around?

What kind of mpg do you get? Thats about what I find myself shifting at on a normal basis, though terrain depending I'll shift earlier or a tick later.

^Is that 35-36mpg city or highway? Because I get around that with mostly city traffic.. 80% city and 20% highway.

I'm surprised how well it is on fuel for being a newer car. I love it.

35-36 is def highway. City is usually less, like 26-28 because of stop and go traffic.

If I want to save on gas I shift at 3k. I get about 38 mpg highway, and about 28-30 city. City mpg is really hard to get a good estimate for me since it varies so much.

Are hondas like American cars where you want to shift as early as possible to save on gas? Or do you generally want to run them out a bit more since they are such small motors and dont consume much gas as long as you stay out of the pedal?

38mpg highway is a pretty close number. Depending how fast you go I suppose.

Well I do tend to have a heavy foot. And yeah you can run them out a wee bit more and not drink to much gas. They are 4 bangers, and not a lot of bawls (stock).

I could rev to probably 4.5-5k and be just fine as long as you dont mat it, just naturally let it get up there.

My civic revs high compared to my old 1998 Dodge Stratus. I could take off in and drive around easily in the 1k RPM range. But when I sold it and bought my civic, were I could drive in before now is were I could stall. If that makes sense...

So yeah I usually stay in the 2-3k RPM range when just driving non-pleasure. My govern is set at 7k, so when I'm having fun I will shift no later then 6.9k (red lines at 6.7k) If I hit the govern at 7k RPMs it bounces, and 1) Thats no good for a engine 2) I need all the power I can get so it doesn't help my speed any.

It's funny, I'm asking about where to shift for maximum economy, and you start talking about oil and water making a d17 not have power.

If you want to get best fuel economy, just keep your RPMs low by shifting as early as possible. Every vehicle I have ever driven, I have found that shifting as low as possible yields the best fuel economy but of course means slow acceleration. If you're truly interested in best fuel economy, go visit a site like gassavers.com or ecomodder.com and you'll quickly learn how to get the best fuel economy.

in normal traffic i shift at 3k for gears 1 to 3 and 2.5k for gears 4 to 6

in faster traffic or going up a hill i shift at 4k for gears 1 & 2, 3.5k for gear 3, 3k for gear 4 and 2.5k for gears 5 & 6

did the same thing with my d17, just disregard the 6th gear lol
