i took off the dizzy
and turn the crank pulley until the pointer on the timing cover point to a number/mark on the crank pulley...
put the dizzy back out (still loose)
turn on engine
n use the timing light to check for timing but it was way off n i cant adjust the dizzy to bring the number/mark back to the pointer...

any help???

You have to warm up the car until the fan comes on and then goes off (idle has to be steady and shouldn't be too low or too high, can't tell you how much it should be since my civic doesn't come with a tachometer so I don't know). Then you have to jump the 2P service connector. And then you mess with timing.

i think its the red mark you need to line it up with correct me if im wrong people, and pull the timing belt tight when you put it on the cam gear so the teeth dont move at the bottom on the crak pulley

Stock timing is at the white mark. Are you using an advance timing light because you need to advance the timing to 12 BTDC (I think that's what it is for your car) on the timing light and then try to match the notch on the lower timing cover with the white mark on the crank pulley.

Sounds like the mechanical timing may be off by a tooth or two on the timing belt.

Before moving the mechanical timing, make sure you're checking the timing the proper way, otherwise you won't get the desired results (i.e. with the car warmed up and idling steady, jumping the service connector, and knowing at what timing your car should be (92-95 civics are at 16 BTDC and I think 96-00 are at 12 BTDC--at least my 99 civic is at 12 BTDC).

If you did everything right, and the timing is not what it should be, then you can adjust the mechanical timing.

It's actually the red mark that you align with the pointer on the lower timing belt cover. This is done with the service connector jumped and the engine hot, but a basic inductive timing light without advancement is all that is needed.

Why were you doing this? Had you just replaced the timing belt?

On my civic, both the 12BTDC and 0 TDC marks are white. Go figure.

To check the mechanical timing, remove the valve cover and then the upper timing belt cover to expose the cam gear. Use a socket wrench to turn the crank pulley counterclockwise until that cam gear is at TDC1 (arrow up, etc.). At this point, the crank pulley also should be at perfect TDC1 (=pointer aligned with white mark on pulley).

i did a head gasket...

when i put the belt on the top pulley (head)... it kinda loose on the left side...

i put everything back together... so i decided to check timing.. it was off...

trying to fix it.. but cant...

After installing a timing belt, you must verify proper mechanical timing before you check the ignition timing with a timing gun. Your mechanical timing is likely off by a tooth or two. You need to remove the crank pulley and reinstall the timing belt such that the cam and crank are perfectly synchronized at TDC1. The diagrams below should help:

Here's how to set your mechanical timing, I just did a timing belt a few weeks ago.

Turn your cam pulley to TDC. That means the words "UP" is up, two arrows to each side are lined up with cylinder head surface.
Here's a pic I took


Next, line up the crank pulley with the mark on the lower timing belt cover. I believe you line the one mark by itself - not the 3 marks bunched together. If you take the pulley off, there should be a white mark on the crank gear - line that up with the arrow on the oil pump. <-- that's if you have the crank pulley and lower timing belt cover off.

Then put on your timing belt, tension it, and turn it over 2-3 times and make sure you don't skip a tooth.

It's helpful to use a ruler when lining up the cam pulley with the head surface - mine was off by a tooth, and it ran pretty crappily

i move the head pulley to UP like u guy say (while belt off)
after i move the crank pulley to where the arrow cover point to the white line on the pulley..
i put the timing belt back to the head pulley


i try both with dizzy on n off.... still off

i mean it off when i use the timing light to check if the white line still line up with the arrow cover

Nope. Mark on crank pulley should be lined around the 2-3 o'clock position. It shouldn't be straight up like in your pictures

No, you're lining up the crank pulley wrong. The mark on the lower timing belt cover should be at the 2 oclock position, it's not at the 12 oclock position. Cam pulley is the one that needs to be straight up. Timing light is for your ignition timing, get your mechanical timing good first.

if that doesnt work, take crank pulley and lower timing cover off, match the 1 white mark on crank gear with the one arrow on the oil pump - you cant possibly mess that up
