Default Signs that VTEC is going bad??

I just got back from meeting a guy selling is 98 ITR (120k miles, DD). We agreed on the price and am getting my money together. He has all service records from day one (very well maintained), all original books, and a 98 itr bra. . When we took it out on the road i could smell a little bit of a burning smell after vtec engaged. I did not notice any smoke from the car nor did my brother (my car inspector). we definitely smelled it, but it wasnt overwhelming. He doesnt drive it much anymore and my brother said that was the reason. (just carbon stuff from the car burning off).

Im asking for any input. Is the vtec in the fritz, or is this something i shoudl worry about. i dont want to end up buying it then having to rebuild the engine or install a new vtec.

thanks

joe

Find out the cost of a 'new vtec' then compare it to the price of valve seals plus installation.

Im not really an 'expert' per say but I dont really think Vtec can go bad. Its not like a fluid or an extra filter or something. Honestly if the guy doesnt drive it that often it will probably smell a little after you get in it a little. I wouldn't really worry. That being said it is a car with 120k on it and taking into high RPM's like that is extra wear on the engine internals. If you plan on hot rodding it you'll probably want to consider engine work in the next 30-40k miles.

I got my R out the other day (just a shade or two over 30k). I havent really driven it since Thanksgiving (well I drove ti to the DMV to get my new plates(even gayer then before, good job Missouri in continuing with the ugliest plates in the country)) Anyway it did have little smell to it the first time I rolled it up to 7500 rpm and backed down. I imagine if its casually spun up to those RPM's there is bound to be some smoke/ smell/ oil burn reguardless of miles.

By saying "vtec" going bad i mean the stuff that makes the vtec work. lol idk what that is but u know....

If there is some leakage in the engine (vtec) some new seals or rings will do the trick? again i just dont want to commit to the car then have to spend money on a bunch of engine work.

Burning oil, perhaps? BTW you may want to do a leak down test just to be on the safe side.

Sorry, you should start out with a compression test first.. here are the instructions http://www.geocities.com/dsmgrrrl/FAQs/compression.htm If your numbers come out okay I guess you won't be needing a leak down test. Im not sure what numbers it should be reading but you can find it here somewhere.

oh ok that doenst sound that bad. im just thinking worst case senario complete engine rebuild. but im sure thats not the case. the car has been cared for. prolly just some worn out seals or whatnot.

should i pay someone to pull the valve cover off and inspect the cylinders to see if there is any oil gunk in there?

Given your responses and whatnot... I highly suggest you take the car to the dealership for an inspection.
