manual transmission stuck in gear need help
I have a 91 hatch with a b16 and a y1 tranny. Was in 5th gear, went to downshift and its stuck in gear. The cable for the clutch is working, i can push the pedal down and it disengages the clutch. With the rain today i haven't got underneath it yet but im thinking it might just be linkage? Anything else to check?

DO IT ON ALL FOURS
Re: manual transmission stuck in gear need help
My bet would be on the linkage. There is nothing that could stop it from coming out of gear. Unless there was some solid parts in the way inside the transmission, if that's the case you have yourself a newly hand grenaded transmission...

i broke my trans a while ago, it could be your change holder assembly ( the part in the trans that picks the gearing) best bet would be to obviously check the linkage first, if thats fine pull the trans, open her up and show us what you got.

this should help A LOT it helped me rebuild my b series trans. the only difference on the d and b series is the change holder assembly (the thing i mentioned before) it will look the same though. like the other guy said, look at the forks too. its most likely the change holder assembly though

Whats weird is it just went, no indication at all that there was a problem. And i wasn't beating on it or anything. But i do appreciate all the help, probably start pulling things apart and pull the trans out this weekend when i have off work.

Re: manual transmission stuck in gear need help
Alright, before i started ripping everything apart i took a hammer and gave the gear shifter a little smack. The shifter popped back to neutral and now it works fine, took it for a ride and i have all gears and reverse. Do i chance that it wont happen again? I did notice the bushings in the shifter are pretty much gone, is it possibe that the ball on the shifter was hanging up? Probably a good place to start i think, I'll replace that and see. But for now ill keep the hammer in the car.

drain the oil, that is if there is any in there, if little to none comes out you heated up the fifth gear and rain it dry, now its dead. were you getting poputs at all prior?

Re: manual transmission stuck in gear need help
i have no idea how to post up pictures but if someone wants to go for it. i would probably invest in #'s 14 and 10 for sure. all the other parts could come in handy if your car is as awesome as mine was with a lot of worn out parts.

Re: manual transmission stuck in gear need help
This happened to my 89 Si a bunch of years ago. I was stuck in 3rd though. The same solution fixed the problem temporarily. A big burly lad sat in the seat and whacked the shifter with his hand. It popped out of 3rd, and everything was fine (all gears shifted fine).
A couple weeks later I decided to take out the tranny and have a look. The 2nd gear shifter fork was broken. One of the fingers broke right off. It was sitting in the bottom of the transmission case. I guess when the thing was stuck in 3rd, that piece of fork was jamming the shifting mechanism. When burly lad boy smacked the shifter, that dislogged the broken piece. It was a pretty easy fix, as I had spare tranny bits liying around. It was just a matter of swapping the shifter fork.
Like you, I had been just driving along, shifting normally and not beating on it. The piece of fork had probably broken at some point in the past when I was beating on it, and chose that point in time to get stuck.
