Default Continous Revving Idle

Ok, its 1994 honda accord ex auto...when I turn the car on, it idles at 2.5 rpm for 1 minute and then drops down 1.5 rpm and continues to radically rev up and down (this happens in park or neutral). When I put the car in drive or reverse, it stays revved at 1.5 as long as the car is in motion. Now if I come to a complete stop while in drive, the revving continues but violently and causes the car to jerk. I have no idea where to even start checking to resolve this issue. Not only is it annoying, but its eating gas like there is no tomorrow due to the constant rev. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

check the coolant level, listen for any hiss which would show a vaccum leak and is the engine light on?

Ok, there is no CEL and no hissing sound. The coolant level is also fine as I just had it checked the other day. I have not checked either one of those valves yet which I assume it has to do with one of those....But I must also add that the engine jerks in the bay when it's cotinuously revving. I think I may need new bushings for the motor mounts if it moves like that. As for cleaning out the valves, what exactly am I supposed to do?

once you take the parts off; start by cleaning them with brake cleaner. the iacv is located behind the i/m and the fast idle valve is under the t/b. good luck.

just on the Idle Air Control Valve (IACV) and the Fast Idle Valve (FIV) make sure that when you clean the (IACV) the you lube it with something and the (FIV) just after you clean it tighten down that plastic pieace.

these symptoms were always the classic idling problems with jap cars. nothing new but is frustrating and without a manual, you'd be groping in the dark. someone saying just clean the FITV and the IACV, well, if you have to ask where they are, then you aint gonna be able to do the job either, at least not without problems or lots of frustration. and if you knew how to do it, then you wouldn't have to ask to begin with. that syndrome is referred to as the "classic researchers dilemma." so, my first advice is to get a helms manual. i got one and it is worth its weight in gold. Haynes suck for this car. the cooling system does not even work the way that Haynes describes it. get the helms, for starters and then ask for more details on H-T when you need them. these idling questions are so typical and common for jap cars and have been addressed so many times in the past that it is probably boring for anyone reading it to even bother responding with any lengthy reply. there is a good bit of info in the arhived data base here at H-T on the subject of idle problems. the 3 main things are IACV, FITV, and air in cooling system (includes being low on coolant). i think ghostaccords test of the fitv is the best answer that anyone ever gave on the subject because it covers all adjustments for the fitv regardles of the problem, you get the correct result every time 100% guaranteed.

You might also want to try to adjust the intake idle screw on the throttle body. I have found that helps also. Also try taking off the throttle body and cleaning with some throttle body cleaner.
