Default car makes a whistling sound when accelerating

my brother drives a 99 prelude SH and sometimes when he accelerates (1st-3rd gear) there is a whistling sound coming from his car,not the type of sound you here from a bad ground on a amp its not coming through his speakers its coming from his motor, the best way i can describe the sound is it sounds like a turo is spulling up,without the blow off valve, but my brothers car is not turboed, what could this noise be?

no its not the intake, i would know that sound i said it was a whistling sound not a sucking sound, and he has a stock intake anyway and i have never heard a STOCK INTAKE or anyother intake make that noise, its too lound and like i said its not a sucking sound, and if it was the intake it would make the noise all the time and like i said it only does it once in a while.

I vote for a plugged exhaust - Muffler or Cat, most likely.

it still could be the intake. it doesnt make a sucking sound when its revved that high it makes a whistling sound like your talking about. my 3rd gen did it. sounded just like a blow off valve.

Not saying that this is the cause, but I'm just going to say from personal experience.. I've heard two Cold Air Intakes 'whistle' and make an odd noise. One was an AEM V2 CAI on a B16B R, and the other was a no-name 3" CAI on a built B17 GSR. If in this case its a stock intake, I doubt that the sound is intake related.

ya i did the research and its the timing belt/tensioner that is making the sound,a honda-tech said that HONDA said with the 5th gen prelude (97-01) that it needs to be changed after 100,000 miles or it could possibly make a whistling/whining noise. i will get it replaced and let you know

yeah I got this sound too and it IS coming from the engine bay, not from the windows or anything. Thats strange I got my timing belt replaced at 90k and right now I have 106,xxx but I still got this noise??

I think your just hearing people whistle at your car while your driving away in it.

If you wanna find the sound your going to have to isolate it. Use a long hallow tube put up to your ear and wave the other end around in your motor bay while running (avoiding moving parts please). When the sound is at its loudest thats how you find roughly where it is. Than you can invest in an automotive stethoscope and use that as a fine tuning tool to find the exact location of the whinning/whistling.

Of course if the sounds a vacuum leak or a leak in the intake track the stethoscope won't work as well, but the long hallow tube with some one reving the motor could help you find an intake leak if thats what it is. Thats my guess though, a small leak around your air filter perhaps. And this is all speculation if this sound your hearing isn't the normal sound ascociated with a CAI or metal intake tubing.

I'm voting intake. You can notice it on any car, but ones with factory intake systems tend to quite it down. If you hold the throttle plate open at the right position at certain RPM's it will whistle. My 97 Prelude does it, 93 Accord, 91 Civic Hatch (barely... the motor isn't big lol).

As for the auto tensioner:
"ya i did the research and its the timing belt/tensioner that is making the sound,a honda-tech said that HONDA said with the 5th gen prelude (97-01) that it needs to be changed after 100,000 miles or it could possibly make a whistling/whining noise. i will get it replaced and let you know"

Mine didn't make a whistling sound, mine was more of a softer whirring/grrring at idlish. It wouldn't hurt to have the auto-tensioner checked since there is a TSB and known issues with it, but I think if you slowly open the throttle until you hear the whistle and increase throttle as RPM's climb you'll get the whistle to stay around.

I have 02 Accord (4 cyl) and I'm getting a similar whirring noise, almost sounds like a supercharger spooling up, not very loud but didn't used to be there. I have had the car since new and now it has 81K miles on it. Timing belt is due at 105K, i hope it isn't that

Could be the bearings on an alternator going bad. They produce a whirring sound.
