Default What's the best transmission for a turbo application?

I've heard so many different things about which tranny is better for boost. I'm just wondering, maybe from some people who have had experience which tranny is best for boost?

I've heard the Si is better b/c of the shorter gear ratios and it gets power to the ground faster.
Then I heard GSR is better b/c you stay in gear longer for boost to build and will have a higher top speed.

I don't really care about top speed...I'm just wondering which tranny would be better?

the best tranny for boost it the LS tranny longer gears = more time in boost. you hvae a d series engine so LS and GSR wont fit. so the si will prolly be the best.

This topic has been covered many times.

Shorter gears = better
GSR is better than the LS.

uh oh here we go again....

You cant go wrong with a tranny that Stephan Papadakis uses on his new civic called a Fortin he runs an 8.12 @184.01 mph with it and he holds the fwd record.

On our regular cars a GSR tranny gets my vote.

AGAIN??????? jesus. well to answer your question, it depends on your mods and application. for all motor, type r is best. for almost every forced induction street car on honda tech....the best is the type r, then b16, then gsr......in that order. the ls should only be "considered" by those with small tires and low rev limiter or those who want top speed only.

Blaze45......no flame but your comment was completely wrong. sorry.

Yes, Jinx is right, you are wrong, not to be a dick, but you also contradicted yourself, even tho it was a mess anyway, you said that.......
the best tranny for boost it the LS tranny longer gears = more time in boost. you hvae a d series engine so LS and GSR wont fit. so the si will prolly be the best.
......... Ok if he has a single cam motor , and he should (in your opinion) have LONGER gears, then he should stick with a cx or vx tranny, in which the gears are the longest available for d-series... ok flame on...

It depends on the tires youre going to run.

For example, a hybrid GSR/ITR tranny will be good for street and
track w/ slicks. Leave 1st & 2nd gearing alone.
Slick expansion further on down the track often causes a drop below peak torque after shift.
So, for a street/track car: Short 3rd & 4th.
5th gear.. Long. You won't use 5th before the traps, and on street, you want to cruise and get reasonable gas mileage.

The 3.230 1st gear is found in most trannies for b-serie vtec. I personally hate it for street. Gear is a torque multiplier. At slower speeds, wheels are turning slow. Adhesion of tires can't "keep up" if there is a rapid change in torque (for example: 1st gear & 200 lb-ft of Torque). At higher speeds, traction is easier to obtain. The wheels are turning faster, therefore keeping up with a rapid change is easier.

First of all the LS tranny is the best for Turbo because
The 1st and 2nd gear ratios are the same as GSR and then taller gear ratio for 3rd
I can see where you guys are coming from when you say GSR is better because of the quick spool up, but when you think of it, you get out of boost faster!

You got it backwards: TALLER means Longer in BOOST!

All depends on what you are going to use it for. Track? To long of a gear is not good, shifting in between gears drops faster, you need to stay in the power band. Short gears like b16a might not let you cross the finish line in time. That's why there are many tire sizes you may use or messing with gear ratios. You just have to find the right combo for you ET and HP.
Ever try LS tranny with gsr final drive? Makes LS tranny shorter by 300 rpms in each 3rd,4th, and 5th. Makes 1st and 2nd the same as GSR.

plain and simple shorter gears = faster acceleration.
Forget the longer gear/boost longer crap.

Longer only because it takes longer to get there. If you get two exact cars with everything exactly the same, driver, tires, traction etc etc but one has a tranny with LS and the other GSR, the gsr would win.

The best tranny would be a sequential tranny custom geared for whatever application you may need.

to be realistic, the best honda tranny to use is what works with your setup. You don't want to stay in boost longer. you want to stay in the useable rev range always.

If you want to stay in boost longer then don't shift your tranny. you can stay in boost all you want.

why do you think the best versions of evo's and rex's are using close ratio. to stay in the power band. not to stay in boost longer.

it's a different story with final drives.

The only reason to use taller gears is when peak torque is in the low rpm. when you shift at redline rpm falls at the useable rev range. AGAIN, USEABLE RANGE.

You can use the LS tranny if you want. Each one o us can be the judge whats best for our cars.

I personal ran faster with LS gearing, I don't like high rpm 5th gear, and save some gas.

GSR is well balance gear ratio for all motor or force induction.

B16 is way to close for turbo, the more you shift, more lag.

Any is fine if you run bigger slicks at the track, but for street LS will give you the best traction.

The key is to balance, torque x rpm, which gearing will affect torque & rpm.

- just my experience

i ran fastest with a b16 tranny and stock final drive. jason hunt did too. those are basically the fastest street cars(honda)in the country. how would you explain that??? taller isn't better in our cases. its as simple as that.

B16 is way to close for turbo, the more you shift, more lag.
you only have lag if you let off the gas.......and no one does that racing.....at least they shouldn't.

i agree you 100%

i have the type r tranny
my 4th gear has almost the same ratio as the 3rd in a ls tranny
and i will spool alote faster then ls tranny and i will be always in my powerband

I like my 3rd gear in my ls tranny, it gives you time to sit there and wave good-bye to the crustang beside you without having to worry about shifting for awhile

but ill jump on the bandwagon and agree......Jinx is right like always

I need to replace my synchros soon. While the trannys open I have the chance to change my gear ratios. Im trying to choose between the ITR ratios or staying with the GSR gear ratios. My concern isnt staying in boost longer, its more about traction (both trannys will have a LSD). With the differences between the two transmissions lower gear ratios - would traction be a problem with shorter gears? Or perhaps that isnt a valid concern? Also, is the ITR tranny or gears built any stronger?

I've got a quick spoolin ball bearing turbo that is relativly small on my ls an I'm using an Si-R tranny. Yikes. It loses traction in first and second and even third. I've never driven a ls tranny on this set up but the torque I've got kills me off the line. Either I need drag radials or I need longer gears cause this sh*t just ain't workin. I get beat by a type R swap in a 94 si hatch untill 80 mph just because I'm spinning my *** off. After traction becomes a mute point it's all over and I walk away. I'd really like to try a longer tranny.

What do you guys think?

Agreed.....the faster you can get into higher gears without dropping RPMs drastically, the faster you accelerate.

The only advantage to having LS gears is top speed.
