Default 2001 Civic - hard to shift into SOME gears.... ?

My 2001 civic MANUAL tranny has 104k on it.

When shifting into 1st and 2nd all is good, nice and smooth.

However if you go from 3rd to 4th it seems like there is a lot of resistance. The opposite happens from going 4th back up to 3rd - It feels like there is a Rubber band force keeping it in the previous gear... sorta like your shifting into a rubbery gear ,,, kinda hard to explain, hope this sounds familiar thought to someone ...

When you go into the next gear, if you hang out in neutral for a second, it will shift just fine. Thats sorta the work-around if u will.

Yes.

Underneath the leather shift boot, at the base of the shifter there is a plastic ball at which the shifter pivots on.

It gets stuck in a lot of our cars, lube it with some WD40 or lithium grease and the stiffness will go away.

To get a good look at it (not really necessary) take apart the center console.

To do it the lazy way, pull down firmly on the shift **** collar, and spray all down there.

Move it all around and your good to go.

u da man, I'll give that a go tomorrow. I had gotten in there before for searching for a noise once and saw the little ball you speak of. Noise ended up being a bottle cap in the vent duck that runs along the length of the seat and center console.

Thanks for such a prompt response.

You may also know this answer also ...

I have a 98 Prelude I knocked the rear view mirror off in the center moving a big box from seat to seat. I'm not real sure how to remount that guy back. Any FAQs u could shoot me to0 would be appreciated.

I notice the big scew, I can't see how to get the piece off the inside of the car that hides the place it attachs

Did you pop the mirror off of the base? If so, get that base off, put everything back together and pick up some of this stuff at your local auto junk store:

I am having a similar issue except:
- it is hard to shift in/out of any gear
- the problem occurs only during rainy days... no kidding!!!
The gear is perfectly fine when the sun shines. Any ideas???

the boot is simply pulled down. make sure you grip it from the plastic at the bottom of your shifter ****, to avoid ripping the actual boot. from there, the shift **** just unscrews. you shouldnt hafto remove the **** though. if you want to do a more precise lube job, you will hafto take off the center console. but from what it sounds like, you wont need to remove the center console..

its easy to do.. took me maybe 15min from start to finish.. jus gotta get to the plastic ball.

undo the shiftknob (like ben850 said) and undo the 2 tabs on the front of the console (one on driver side, one on passenger. they just pop out). then undo the 2 screws on the back of the console (you may have to move the seats up to get to the screws.) after that, the console is loose and should come tight out. there is a white plastic ball in the shifter that you gotta lube up. lithium grease works wonders, but i guess wd40 works too. lube it, work the shifter around a little bit to make sure the grease gets in there good and put everything back together. end result -- shifts like it was brand new! hope this helps

Sincere gratitude to everyone above. you guys rock! This forum rocks!. For now, i just leaked down a few ml of 3-in-1 lubricant down the stick and it feels like new. I plan on making a more elaborate clean and lube this weekend, removing the center console. Found this "elaborate" tutorial on removing the shift ****:

Didnt need it, but thought its worth mentioning.
