1991 Honda Accord LX 5-speed - 300k.

Please see the picture below. I have the trans out due to excessive trans noise. My problem is extremely similar to the trans noise AccordEX1991 was having in his post. Please see link below.

I can not seem to get the transmission's belhousing to split any further than 3/4 of an inch, please see the picture or link to it. I'm not a trans guru by all means. Can you help me? Is it in gear?

You have to try and split the case all around and it should just, for lack of a better word, pop off. Are all the bolts holding it together out? Do you have a service manual?

All the bolts that keep the trans housing together are out. I'm sorry I had trouble posting the picture.

The casing is 3/4 of an inch apart all around. I even removed (then reinstalled) several other bolts on the housing just to be sure I have them all out. I've been afraid to really force the casing apart using a pry bar and leverage. Is that what it takes? Do they typically come apart with ease AFTER you initally pry the housing apart?

I do not have a service manual.... just a hayes manual.

Please let me know your thoughts.

It has nothing to with the fact that it may be 'in gear'???

Can you post the pictures? I don't have myspace so I can't log in. If it's what i'm thinking you probably haven't released the circlip completely from the shaft bearing on the back side of the transmission. You'll need a friend or two to do it.
Have someone tap the case with a dead blow hammer (or rubber mallot), someone else fidget with the circlip and the other person try to jiggle the case off. It's a pain sometimes but it will come off.

If I'm looking at that pic. right and thats your tranny. You need to take the shift linkage out. There should be 4 10 or 12mm bolts holding the top on the little box. Once those are off. Pry off the top and inside you see were the shift lever is that goes through the side. Line up all the shift forks and you will see a 10mm bolt with a lock on it. Bend the tabs down on this lock and take the 10mm bolt out. Once that bolt is out then you can just pull the lever out.

Also make sure that the revers light sensor is out. There are also 2 or 3 bolts on the side of the case that hold springs and ball bearings in. You will need to take these out as well. Make sure that the Snap ring on the end gear stake is all the way off too.

There may be some thing else, but with out looking at one This is what I KNOW has to come off.

Stand the transmission on the bell housing side, pull off the shifter assembly and try the steps I posted above.

Also go ahead and replace the distributor o-ring and the valve cover gasket.
