Auto gear shift is hard to get out of park and back in
I have searching threads looking for an answer or diagram as to why my son's 1990 Accord coupe auto transmission is hard to get out of park and back in at times. Once I get past park everything is smooth. The tranny shifts fine etc. It's just sticky trying to move in and out of park. Anybody pointing me in the right direction would be appreciated.

Re: Auto gear shift is hard to get out of park and back in (gowings)
Two things could be the cause of this problem, The shift inter lock is out of adjustment or the solenoid is not fully retracting.
Secondly, the Shifter cable that runs under the car to the transmission.
If you remove the center console the fault should be easy to find.

I had this exact same problem for about a year. Then on a long road trip it got worse, and then I lost reverse, neutral, D4, and eventually D3. It turned out that the problem was the shift cable, and replacing it fixed all the problems. I think it's usually called the "AT selector cable."
