Default 2000 honda odyssey with p0420 code

I believe this is the f23 engine.. if not Tourinaccord you can move it wherever it needs to go.

I searched this code and got that its the Cat converter thats going bad.. or it can be the sensors. From what my father told me, the dealership replaced the sensors while ago under a recall of some sort. The van has 151k on it. If I clear it it will come back with in 20 or so miles.. and i have a code reader/monitor if I need to read the o2 sensors to help out.

if you can watch the rear O2 sensor [monitor] try this, with the engine fully warmed up hold it at 2000 RPM you should see a fairly steady reading of about .7 volt. Hold it at that RPM for about a minute and then let off the throttle. The reading Should Not spike up any higher.

FWIW I have a friend up in Nebraska, that puts the cat converters in an electric oven on the "self clean" mode, super high temp, then blows them out with compressed air.
He claims it makes them last longer.
Never tried this myself.

thanks, i will try that.

i talked to a friend who was an ex-tech for honda and he said these things had a problem with the sensors and trannys haha. He said to get a cat thru honda with a lifetime warranty or to get anything else for half the cost if the rear sensor doesn't fix the problem.

2000 Odyssey uses a J35 engine.

P0420 indicates that the catalyst efficiency is below a threshold value - this means your cat converter is bad and must be replaced to pass an emissions test and/or to turn the Check Engine light off. Pretty common for higher-mileage '99-01 Odysseys, and on most OBD-2 cars in general for that matter.

Your converter is in particularly poor health if the code is coming back within 20 miles. Most of them take much longer than that for the code to re-appear after resetting the ECM, even in cold weather.

A stored P0420 code in a Honda car is NEVER EVER caused by a fault in the secondary oxygen sensor. I'm a 10+ year Honda service writer and my shop works on over 70 Hondas and Acuras per week. I have never seen a P0420 code in a Honda eliminated by changing an oxygen sensor. ("Modifying" a sensor, on the other hand, is a different story.)

You have the option to go with either an OE Honda replacement cat, or any of various aftermarket brand replacements. The OE cat alone is over $900, but for good reason - it's made to last well beyond the 8 year/80,000 mile warranty period. Most aftermarket cats are around 1/3 the price, but in many cases will last only 1-2 years before the Check Engine light comes back with a code P0420. If you don't mind the hassle of dealing with it every couple of years, then you can install several aftermarket converters for the price of an OE one. If the light annoys you and you intend to keep the car for a long time yet, then just bite the bullet and buy a Honda converter.

The catalytic converter is only covered for 8 years or 80,000 miles under the federal emissions equipment warranty.

or you can use a oxygen sensor spacer to take the rear O2 further out of the exhaust stream. Works like a charm for less then $20

Not legally, if local laws require a visual or anti-tampering inspection of emissions equipment.

Someone unfamiliar with the modification may not notice it . . .

You can buy a Honda cat from an online dealer like Majestic for around $567 + shipping and have someone install it.

Took my van to dealership this morning for a free diagnostics, throwing a code P0401 and P0420. They want 1500.00 to replace CAT and clean the EGR Ports and that is AFTER they take off $200.00......They said I need 3 motor mounts, tranny mount and 5 seals on the power steering pump cuz it's leaking (even though it don't whine and feels fine) then get this....as I left and was getting on the hiway, the transmission felt like it was slipping, when I pushed the gas peddle the RPM's went way up then dropped down and the van jerked and made a hard thumping sound....I put some transmission fluid in it, was okay for about 20 miles, then started again. Did they do something to my van? Is it the tranny???? ****...should I just trade it in and buy another one (and have a car note again)?????
