The hole in my oil pan to drain the oil is stripped. Is there anything i can do short of putting on a new oil pan to fix this problem? I heard a rumor that there are some oil plugs put out by aftermarket companies that are taped a bit to take car of this problem without replacing the pan ... is there any truth to this, or does anyone else have a remedy for this situation???

i have no real answer but im willing to bet that you have a friend that will sell you one cheaper than what that fancy plug costs. sorry i have no real answer but when mine stripped, my good friend gave me one for free since it was on a bad block. good luck

I'd just swap the oil pan, but that's me.

you might be able to make a new thread, but you will need a bigger bolt. the best bet would be to get a NEW one

self taping plug. Go to the auto parts store, they have them in various sizes

Naah, just plug it with a rag and call it good.

Seriously though I would get a self tapping plug from a parts store and order a new pan while you're there.

14x1.5 mm non plated nut and a new drain plug. if u or someone who you know can weld u can figure it out. this is for a annealed steel pan. the aluminum pans our usually cheap.

Dont waste your money and time removing the oil pan.
My idiotic friend (actually no longer a friend) once wanted to change the oil in my grand am. I let him, out of good will. Well, I guess it's my fault because I wasn't paying attention to him and he used vise scrips to TRY and remove the bolt. Got it stripped and loose. FINALLY he used some sense and used a wrench, but when he tightened it back on, he made it too tight.
Months later, when my other friend and I had to change my oil, we tried and tried to get at it but it just wouldn't grip. The bold was stripped to the point that it was round.

Sorry for the boring story, but here's your answer.
Basically what we did, was use a plug in drill and just drilled a hole in the head of the bolt. Then, I stuck a chisel in the hole and tapped it sideways with a hammer. Ta-DA! It was off.
Just make sure you have a new bolt when you do it

Ummmm....good tip but....the oil pan threads were stripped, not the head of the bolt.

x2 Besides, you'll probably have to take the pan off to drill it and tap it anyway. Nothing would be as easy or seal as good as just getting a new pan. Just go to a U-Pull it or junkyard. They hook it up cheap.

How do you get a drain plug off that just spins and spins but does not come out?

I need to drain the oil before I remove the oil pan and install a oil new pan.

either don't drain the oil and be careful when removing the pan...

OR

drill a hole through the bottom of the pan...it's trashed anyway!
