Default ~ B18a1 NON-VTEC Build Thread ~

Sup, fellas.

At long last, my build is coing together. The set-up is as follows:

Block:
b18a1 Block
p30 Pistons(.25 over)
New Main/Rod Bearings
ARP Rod Bolts
ARP Head Studs

Head:
b18a1 Head
Edelbrock Performer X
AEM 3" Intake
Crower 403's
Crower Valve Springs & Ti Retainers
New Steel Valve Locks
New Valve Seals
Laskey Flat faced Valves

*edit* I'll be doing a 3-angle valve job, as well. *edit*

Forgive me, I'm sure I've forgotten at least a few things.

Not sure on a header selection, yet. Probably going to have to go with something 4-2-1, and tack on a 2.5" collector. Since ground clearance in PA isn't the greatest.

Well. Basically, the engine's on a stand in the shop, gonna break open that block tomorrow to see what I need to do and then clean it up. And hopefully I'll have the block bored next week. But, I'll just update as i make progress.

and ... pictures.

How she sat in the Teg.

Haha, hauling her up in the accord.

And why yes. I do like getting my head in the front seat.

Parts.

and the Teg.

thanks for looking. feel free to give any input.

thanks for looking,
Chris.

good luck

You should have went with 62404 camshafts though, I wish I did. The 62403's are nice though.

well, i'm glad you're trying to feel what would make me happy. however, i currently have a vtec motor in one of my vehicles. i find it to be a little bothersome having to wait for vtec to kick in. i'm impatient. thanks for your .02 anyway.

as for not using the 404's. i don't know, i don't really have a good reason for sticking with the 403's. i thought about using the 404's, but i figured i'd just try the 403's first and see if i was satisfied.

as much as this thread as taken off, i think we have to get back on topic.

block completely stripped
"hot-tanked"
should be taking the cylinders out to size next week

only picture i snagged during the process.

sorry, i'm bored. so updates.

Nice so far. Don't let anyone talk you out of doing the build the way you want to (even though you obviously aren't going to). It's all personal preference. I'm sure you'd regret it later on if you changed something that you wanted in the first place.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by b-vtec &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">.. The last thing people want when they post their builds is for someone else to tell them they are wasting their time and money. You are allowed to build your motor anyway you want, why try to impose what you think he should do when it isn't your time or money. I have never understood why people do this...

Good luck with the rest of the build man!! Is the car going to be a daily driver or just a weekend car?

Sick Build.

I am looking to the same thing. Just 404's.

And everyone should try and keep the "VTEC vs Non" out of this thread. If he wanted VTEC, he'd get it.

IMO, I like the broad powerband the built LS gives

In for results

eh, im not satisfied with the 404's, whatever you make for power your just going to want to make more anyway so its better starting smaller

first off. thanks for all the interest, fellas.

this build was originally intended as a road course/autocross car. but the more i think about it, i think once its done i'm gonna use it as a daily and pickup something RWD as a track car.

the 403's. haha, everytime i say i went with 403's, people say "why not 404's/405's?" but as JCushing said. you're always gonna want more power. at least i figure 403's are a good start.

'im gonna try and swing by the shop before work and snag a few pics / my connecting rods so i can pop out the stock rod bolts.

again, thanks for the interest everyone.
-Chris

Hope it's not a daily.

PCT's bring your compression over 13:1.

the c-speed calculator is pretty good, but i know there are a few glitches on it. you can't take it as the gospel truth for all situations.

well, swung by the shop and grabbed the pistons/connecting rods. after work, knocked out the stock rod bolts. gonna press out the wrist pins and clean up the rods then install the ARP units whenever i get the chance.

oh, anyone wanna see some bearing pics, thrilling, i know. i left my cheat-sheet(haynes manual) in the shop and im kinda new to inspecting bearings thing, really, just if anyone thinks they see anything unusual. speak up. let the tech-talk flow. haha

*UPDATES*

Checked my main bores and cylinders today.

The Bad:
-The cylinders weren't too bad, but cylinders 2&3 were kind of egg-shaped (about .0015" difference, out-of-round wise). Still, more than I'd like.

The good:
-The cylinders, although somewhat out-of-round, seem to be straight.

-Nothing on the mains was more than .0005" deviation from itself, and even the deviation was still within spec.

Pictures

block.

dial bore gage

found a good use for my home-less oil caps

cheers

Very cool build. Looks like you are taking all the proper precautions while building this motor. I think you will be happy with the combination of parts you've chosen. Good luck.

It's always nice to see a guy doing all his own work. No one else to blame when it goes wrong and when it goes right no one else can take the credit.

You said that the car's going to be for road racign and rally-X. I am unfamiliar with Rally-X. How's that different than auto cross? Is it like an automotive version of SuperMotard? Pavement and dirt transitions in a race? Sounds interesting.

Good luck on the build.

thanks, man. well, i figure its the best way to learn. this is my first complete tear-down and build up, so we'll see how it goes.

and wow. i didn't even notice that i wrote rally-x(rallycross). well, rallycross is basically like autocross, only in the mud and/or snow. that was a typo. i meant to put auto-x(auto cross).

i assure you, the head install will not be skimped upon in my write up. i'm gonna start on that after i finish up the block.

thanks for the input, guys.
