Default DIY: Replace Climate / Heater Control Bulbs (oddmut)

Replacing Heater / Climate Control Bulbs, How to Fix

Here’s what it looks like when your bulbs are blown (left 2 bulbs) and cause your climate control (Honda calls it heater control) to not light up.

Tools needed:
8mm socket
Flat Head
Philips Head

Parts needed:
Bulb, Neo-Wedge (A); Part number: 79609-S5A-003

First things first, if you have the stock radio make sure you have the anti-theft code for the radio, the write down the frequencies for the preset buttons.

Pop the sides off of the piece loose in the image. (Between the cups and the panel for the shifter boot there are two screws underneath that hold the pieces together. You'll have to pop up the panel first. Mine isn't screwed in so it's easy to remove.) They pull away from the console to remove. Once the sides are loose pull the piece away from the radio towards the shifter. Do not pull to much because there are wires connected to switches or electrical appliances that are connected to it.

Once the piece above is removed there is a middle screw on a metal plate. Only 1 screw. Remove that with the 8mm socket or a Philips head.

After removal of the screw, use your Philips head to pop up the entire stereo face. Pull it out a little bit to notice the wires behind it.

With the wires visible you’ll be able to see the plugs. Go ahead and disconnect those.

This image shows the plug for your climate/heater control. Unplug that.

Once that is unplugged pull the whole piece out. This part is now not necessary but it will make it a little easier to put the new bulbs in without having to fumble with a big unit. There will be two screws on the sides of the heater control. Unscrew them and pull the heater control out.

You will see two white back sides of the bulbs. Use a flat head and turn it left 90 Degrees. It will unlock it and remove it. Put the new bulbs in and turn in right 90 degrees. It will lock in.

I plugged the plug for the heater control in and tested it. Here’s the results! It works!

Put everything back together. If stock radio put back the anti-theft code in and set back the radio station presets.

Set your clock and any other setting which you had.

Again I did this with my phone as my flash light and my camera beside me and the little if none at all light in the apartment garage.

Heater control lights up again.

This thread is great, it helped me tons but I had a quick question or two. I have the cruchfield guide and it shows that i have to remove my shift ****, i drive a manual, is that necessary? To clarify as well i just need to separate the sides of the console in the middle and then pull the bottom half and the rest of the directions are just self explanatory?

For me it wasn't necessary but there are actually two screws that are underneath the black panel that is connected to the leather. Those two screws actually attach to the side pieces. More on the location of the two screws it's between the cup holder and the black panel for the leather boot. mine wasn't so screwed in so it was an easy pop out.

do you change the bulbs the same way for the dials that control the temperature and air flow (rotating them 90 degress) or you can't because they are different bulbs? and how do you get to changing the bulbs in the switches (cruise, mirrors, sun/moon roof)?

I didn't check the temp controls but it possible could be the same thing. rotate 90 degrees. the bulb type might be different check majestichonda.com on the parts section.

to change those you need to remove the tapping screw underneath the buttons. upon the draw and remove the tapping screw.
There are two clips that hold the bottom part in. once removed you will be able to see the rest and how to fix it.

After a lot of searching and frustration I finally pieced together what you must do FIRST when you have the auto trans. (2005 civic 4D VP)

#1 You remove the trim around the shifter console. I've marked the pry spots on one side (there are two more on the other side in the same location) with red arrows and show the piece already lifted.

#2 You remove the center console top cover. I've marked the pry spots on one side (there are two more on the other side in the same location) with red arrows and show the piece already lifted.

#3 Now, you can remove the 2 screws I've marked with red arrows and then jump to the beginning of this guide and follow the rest of the steps.

So to be clear, these two bulbs will light up all three buttons?

Do you by any chance have directions on how to do this on an 02 lx? I need to get to the bulb in the gear shifter, but the 02 does not have the plastic ring frame, its just one giant piece connected to the entire center console
