Default 1999 Honda Accord EX - how many miles is too many?

Hey, new here and we're looking to buy a good commuter car for my wife. Went and test drove a '99 EX with the 2.3 vtec. It has 140k on it.

Without knowing too much about Hondas, how many more miles can I get out of this? It's got all the required maintenance done at the stealer, including the timing belt. It also has a clean CarFax, and it drove really nice.

Thanks

140k is NOTHING for an accord! You should get atleast 250-300k miles without having to replace anything major, tranny might die out at 250k though.

thanks....Like I said, it's just a commuter car and we want something reliable. We're not looking to pimp it out or anything, although it already has a little spoiler on it which looks good.

Thanks

auto or manual?

the auto trans has a slim next to none chance of making it 200K

Google it. 98-02 Accords have a bad record for tranny issues. If the price is right, it is still worth the risk. Budget upto 2K on tranny in the near future...

It's an auto. It shifted nicely and I drove it pretty hard. I'll do so.me more research on it. Price is right below KBB for a Good standing used car which is around 5700

you're an idiot (looking at your join date i'm not suprised)...........a little research will show that

a. Honda had class action lawsuit against them for auto trans failure rate in these cars.
b. There is are a few serious design flaws that will MOST LIKELY RESULT IN REMATURE FAILURE
1. Differential bearings are substandeard and wear at an excessive rate
2. 2nd gear receives lower lubrication levels and when the main filter starts to get clogged with debris......BAM no more 2nd gear

he might get lucky but i doubt it unless the trans has been replaced already..........and with those things costing from 3500 to 5K from honda installed........

oh and unlike you, I ACUTALLY HAD ONE OF THOSE CARS EAT THREE (YES THREE) AUTOMATICS WITHIN 11K MILES.

Ok, did the research, and there seems to be a lot of really mad people out there because of this tranny issue. Oh well. Looks like we'll be looking at the Toyota Camrys for the commuter.

I don't want to drop nearly 6k on this, then turn around and have to drop another 2k.

Thanks for the help guys.

Even though the transmission rate failure is higher than an average commuter, I heard that there is about a 5 -7% rate of failure in these trannys.

If you have maintanance records, and all that good stuff, you should be mostly in the clear (assuming they kept up on main., used genuine fluids, and the car hasnt been driven to death). I am not saying that your tranny WONT die, but not EVERY tranny in this gen will go out.

If the price is right, you like the car, and you feel confident with the buy, I would say do it.

my car was 350,000 on it. replaced the tranny around 290ish. of course, i broke an axle and changed it in the street, never replaced the tranny fluid it lost and drove it for 2 years before the input bearing started making so much noise i felt bad and replaced the trans. i only replaced it because i had a free one, it still was working/shifting fine. bell housing was smashed from jumping the car.

never said i was easy on it.

replaced motor about 10k ago from shear neglect. in the 5 years i owned it i never changed the oil... i take that back, i changed it once when i replaced the oil pan. once again gettin crazy airtime in the accord.

you never mentioned if it was 5spd or auto. that year has alot of auto trans issues from honda softening up the shifts causing excessive slipping and clutch wear.

2002 Accord SE , 228k miles. Trans replaced by Honda at 99000 miles due to slipping, under warranty. I removed the inline, non service filter they put on the trans, and use a Magnfine filter now.
