Is it legal to set back the odometer when getting a new engine?

then you produce the papers that says the motor has 10,000 miles on it and give it to the purchaser. plain and simple.

No, it's not legal. Although in certain state you can have it noted on your title that you have a newer motor in you car. If you have documented millage records on the newer motor you can even have the millage of both the chassis and the motor listed. Not sure what states allow it but I remember talking to someone that did it.

No?

It is highly illegal, you cannot set back your odometer, because your just changing the engine, what if different things go on the car like brakes after 2,000 miles and the odometer says 12,000. Things like that should make you say, hmm..ya know I dont know what im talking about. Because, if you reset the odometer on any car, it is illegal everywhere.

There is no law that says "You can lower your odometer when you get a new engine." but there is one that says "Odometer Rollback is illegal". I think it's even punishable by jail time.
