I went to change the oil on my '97 accord this weekend and noticed a drop or two of oil on the ground. I thought "No biggie, I'll just clean everything off and see if it's the drain plug bolt." As I'm wiping off the pan, I see a nice line of oil seeping out by the drain bolt. Wipe some more and notice it is not coming from the bolt, but a crack in the pan! My question is this, my repair manual states to remove the front support strap and drop the pan. Well, the pix in the manual look like they already removed the exhuast pipe ahead of the cat. Does this mean I need to remove the exhaust pipe and support strap or is anyway to take the pan off with the exhaust in place? It's a pretty tight space. Thanks.

sometimes you can just unbolt the pipe from the manifold and let it hang down. But you do need to remove that brace to get the pan down.
the pan could probably be fixed but I would rather spend the money and replace it

Thanks. I already picked up a new pan and gasket. I thought about fixing the pan, but your right it's better to replace it.

I helped a friend replace the gasket on his 95 Accord a couple times and the easiest way I think is to unbolt the B pipe from the manifold, remove a couple of the hangers and let the exhaust rest on the ground, if your using jack stands that is. Otherwise you would have to support it if your using a lift. Then just remove the center beam of the from cross member, the small side plate at the tranny, and then unbolt the oil pan.

Make sure you use a little HondaBond at the half circle on the oil pan when you reinstall. When putting it up make sure you have the gasket aligned real good before locking it down.

Also, it's recommended in the Helm manaul that you tighten the bolts and nuts in 3 steps and torque them in a criss-cross pattern to 10lb-ft.

Cool thanks. The B pipe comes straight down from the manifold and has the bend, correct? There is a steel mesh, flexi-looking, pipe just ahead of the cat. do I need to remove that as well? My manual suggests the gasket adhesive at the 1/2 circle as well, where exactly is this 1/2 circle?

yes, the B pipe comes down from the manifold and has a bend. Just unbolt the B pipe from the manifold and thats it, like Ross 4107 said, just let it hang. If you remove a couple exhaust hangers that will help the exhaust pipe sit lower and give you more room to work with.

Thanks again for the info. The replacement went pretty smooth other than a nut on the exhaust pipe was frozen to the stud. Had to replace the stud and nut. Two studs on the oil pan receiver came out with the nuts as well. I replace these with bolts and lock washers. Should hold.
