Default 2002 Civic A/C Light comes on when heater is switched to windshield defrost.

My 2002 Civic A/C Light comes on when I turn the heater switched to windshiled defrost.
In this position, I cannot get the A/C turned off.
I have to turn the heater switch from defrost to floor heat - then I can press the A/C button & it goes off.

Maybe I could just pull the A/C fuse.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Is this unique to Honda.
Usually you turn on the A/C and the condensor motor kicks in & you fuel economy goes to the floor.
Not the case with Honda?

1) Have the car turned off.

2) Turn the "air condition position" **** to the left all the way (counter-clock-wise).

3) Hold the "air-recirculation button" and the "A/C" button "DOWN". (don't touch the "defrost" button)

4) Start the car with the "BUTTONS" held down, and wait for 7 seconds.

5) All done. You can turn the "A/C" off and on now.

P.S. To turn the original feature back on, repeat all steps, but for "STEP 2", turn the **** all the way to the "right" (clock-wise).

Thanks - but didn't work.
Attached is a (URL Link to) a JPG of my heater console.
Does your solution work for this model?

This is in the OLD FAQ's:

What you will need: Two Fingers

Time Needed: 10 seconds.

Annoyed with how you can't turn off the A/C when you turn to defog? Here's the override (realize that A/C expediates the defog process).

These steps are taken from a discussion thread on 2k1civic.com

1. Turn Car Off
2. Turn Temperature **** To Full Blue (All the way to the left - Counter-Clock Wise)
3. Turn Vent **** To Off (All the way to the left - Counter-Clock Wise)
4. Hold Down Air Recirculation Button As Well As A/C Button
5. Keep Both Buttons Depressed and Start Car
6. Keep Both Buttons Depressed for 7 Seconds
7. *AC LIGHT SHOULD BLINK*

You will now have control of your A/C regardless of what setting you are in, to revert back, simply repeat the procedue.
