Differential Bearing in B16 YS1
I am getting ready to replace my differential bearing in my b16'ed DA this weekend. I am just wondering really how hard it is and what else is involced. I have my friend helping me who is a good mechanic.
How can I also check to make sure if this is definitely my problem? There is about a 1/2 inch of play (up and down) in my pass side axle.

actually me and my friend are just takin the tranny out, but the tranny guy @ my job is gonna split the case and do the bearing. The bearing is right there though right??

If it's the bearing's fault for the 1/2" of play, then those bearings would make all kinds of chafing, grinding, whining noises. The axle will rock a little in the diff. I'd check the retaining clip on the end of the axle and the appearance of the splines in the diff and on the axle for any galling.
To replace the differential bearings is about an hour job. It might take a little longer if you spend more time removing seals, bearings, gearsets, and change holders to clean the casing halves.
A press is really nice to have because sometimes a bearing won't come off with just a bearing splitter and puller. I've ran into that problem a couple of times.
Also, you probably won't need to reshim the transmission unless the diff thrust clearance is too loose already. Have him check the clearance before splitting the casing and then again after you've installed the new bearings. If you need to reshim, then you'll have to wait on the shim(s), depending on how many you have to order to get it just right.

What do you mean the splines, what should I look for with them?? The thing is when you grab the pass. side axle right where it goes into the tranny there is a 1/4'' - 1/2'' of play up and down but NO play @ all side to side and NO play @ all rotating. Maybe we should check/replace the pass side axle AGAIN before dropping the trans though huh??

**UPDATE** Okay we just took the (new) pass side axle again and stuck our finger in it and there is play still without the axle in. It has movement up/down & side/side, pretty much every angle. So this definitley rules out the axle right? And pretty much keeps ours target @ the Differential Bearing, right? THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ALL THE INFO...
