Default Pain in hand/palm after driving.

Do any of you guys get sharp pains in your hand after spirited driving? I noticed that after a driving event I experience sharp pain in my hand. With the palm of your hand facing your face the pain is at the top of the palm below the first middle finger joint and above the first/top palm line.

The pain is at its worst on my left hand when I'm making a right turn and my left hand is at the 12 o clock position. My right hand doesn't get the pain that much, but if it does, it's in the same position in the hand below the middle finger and most of the pain is when I'm shifting.

I don't think it's muscle ache...maybe a pinched nerve or vein. I don't wear gloves. I dont' know if the thinness of the stock steering wheel could be a cause. And I don't think I'm gripping the wheel too tight. I gripped the wheel too tight when I first started out and the soreness I had afterwards was definitely from the muscles.

Just curious if any of you guys have had this.

Dont hold the steering wheel too hard. Be gentle.

Jackie Stewart says you should grip the wheel like every woman should grip a man...

Yep, your are gripping the wheel to hard. I used to have this problem until I made a point t teach myself to release my grip and open my hand whenever I had a chance. I usually do it on straighaways or in low G-force corners.
The most amazing part was with my grip relaxed my inputs and total driving became smoother.

When going down a straight do you take your hands off the wheel to "rest" them? Do you notice a color change in your skin when you do that?

You are gripping the wheel too hard, I had the same issue until I kept telling myself to hold it firmly but not a death grip.

No, I relax my grip and open my hand up, move my fingers, etc. Could not tell you about a color change since I wear gloves.

Hold your pinky finger out. Your grip is too tight which probably means so is your body to a large extent. I would try and be cognizant of it as best you can and just relax. Or go see a doctor for this issue in that the location of the pain you reported may not be "grip" related.

I used to grip the wheel too tight. The pain I felt then was muscle soreness.

The pain I sometimes feels now is sharper and it's when there is pressure on that point in my hand just before the middle finger. If I press it, or if I'm at 12 o clock with my left hand on the steering wheel is when I experience the sharp pain in that bone area of the hand. That's why I think it may be some kind of pinched nerve and that maybe all the hand movement during hotlapping may be a contributor.

I'll have the doc look at it at my next physical.

For people learning to fly, when they hold the yoke to tightly, the instructors make them hold pencils across and inbetween each finger (pencil perpendicular to your fingers)

the harder you sqeeze, the more it hurts. the idea is you learn not to death grip it

My left leg shakes uncontrollably after a race/HPDE session.

Whether I have a pucker-moment or not.
