Default Identifying a Zex D-Series VTEC Cam?

A friend of mine bought a Civic that had a D16Z6 in it with the mount holes stripped out of the block. The guy who sold the car to him told him the engine had a Zex cam in it, so he's got it out and right here in front of me.

Are there any I.D marks on the cam itself to prove if it's a Zex cam, and furthermore, are there any sure-fire ways to tell which Zex cam it is if it is in fact, a Zex cam?

I can post some pics if I have to, but here's a few things I noticed:

The cam is stamped "REVL-2" in the groove just before the cam gear. It's also stamped "Q509L" in the same area 180 degrees from the "REV-L" stamping. These may be factory honda stampings if the cam is a regrind.

On the distributor side, near the key, it is etched (by a hand tool) "59300" - I thought this might be something Zex did when gridning the cam/making it.

Any clues guys?

Thanks.

Well I just went to http://www.zex.com and looked up their cams, and it seems that the "Severe Street/Competition" D16Z6 cam's part number is the same "59300" as the hand scribed number on the distributor side of the cam.

So now for any of you Zex folks, do they usually hand etch the part number with a hand etcher like this, or do you think some kid actually went through the trouble to do it himself?

I think it's probably the Zex cam...Lastly does anyone know how to I.D Zex valvetrain? Any obvious markings?

lol, that would be funny if some kid hand etched it in there, what a waste of time that would be.

i have a question, i know that cams improve performance a bit, but how are they diff than oem.

I have the 59300. You'd have to mark it urself to see what it is. As a matter of fact, when I got it someone else had marked 59300 on it. I don't know if zex did that or if the other seller who I purchased it from did it.

I'm thinking that perhaps Zex etches it by hand, because any sort of stamp tool would compromise the camshaft itself.

I guess I'll contact Zex now.
