Hey Everyone,

My girlfriend is looking to buy a '96-'00 Honda Civic EX... And it would be best not to spend $8,000 for the car, only to dump another $500 into it 3 weeks later for the belt. You know? I'm getting different figures for when the D16Y8 timing belt should be changed...

- When does Honda say the D16Y8 timing belt should be changed?
- What is the highest mileage this belt can withstand, assuming the car was not abused?

Honda recommends 60k for severe maintenance and 90k for normal maintenance.

I have a 99 hatch with a D16Y7. The motors are a dime a dozen. I have 230k on mine right now and last changed the belt back at 85k - so...145k so far. The belt is only 3 years old though. If it breaks, I've got a spare sitting in the shed.

just read in one of my repair manual's to change the timing belt and water pump at 105,000. not sure on the intervals after that though.

i just bought my 97 EX last week, and its got 99,5XX miles on it, and no leaking water pump yet. i figure when i get a good block of time open i will just tear it down and change em.

I don't think you want to wait for your timing belt to fail unless you have a spare engine in the shed.

If the vehicle is regularly driven in one or more of the following conditinos replace the belt at 60,000 miles.

-in very high temperatures (over 110 F , 43C)
-In very low temperatures (under -20F, -29C)

Needless to say if its used and has over 70,000 miles I would get it changed. You can usually adjust the asking price for maintenance items that have not been done. Timing belt usually includes water pump and tensioner replacement and valve adj too. Then on to plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter, 02 sensor, etc.

Alot of people sell their cars before 100k miles, which is just when all these items come up for replacement. It isn't bad if you can get them to lower the price or if you can do the work yourself.

When the seller shows you the high book price, thats assuming that ALL maintenance has been done.

Haggle the inital price first, then introduce the fact that it needs xxxxx.

If I didn't have the spare in the shed, it would have been changed alooong time ago.

I still do all the maintenance regularly though - cap, rotor, plugs, wires, air filter, fuel filter, hoses and coolant, drive belts, O2 a few times already, valve adjustment (well, at the last timing belt change) - I'm sure I'm forgetting a few. She runs like a champ - still getting 40mpg.
