What does a blinking check engine light mean?
recently with my 00 gsr (125k) the motor is shaking a lot and causing the chasis to shake a lot. When you get out of the car the exhaust sounds like its backfiring real bad. The check engine light will be solid for a minute, then it will start to blink. Car idles rough as ****, but will not stall out. I checked the cel and got misfire codes and cyl 1 and two were misfireing. Once i changed the plugs, cap, wires only two was misfiring. I did a compression check on two and got 10 psi on cyl two, 45 when wet. Would a piston ring gone bad cause the car to idle rough, and make the check engine light blink? Today the same thing happened to my pops 96 civic with 232k. However about 5000 miles ago we got new plugs, rotor, cap, ignitor and wires. The civic is sohc and doesnt burn any oil at all. Cant do a compression check on it because i dont have a guage anymore. Same symptoms are happening with the civic. blinking check engine light, chasis and motor shaking, exhaust feels like its back firing a lot.

i don't have my book in front of me but i believe it means catastrophic damage may occur to the engine/ catalytic convertor if you continue driving ...
you may have a bad set of rings but i would also suspect your valvetrain ...

Re: What does a blinking check engine light mean? (Stripped Honda)
blinking cel usually means hardcore misfires, maybe carbon holding open a valve a little bit, hole in piston, bad rings or anything causing you to have bad compression. try switching wires one with a known good spark with the crappy misfiring cylinder

ill go check out my coolant resivior to see if there is oil. I dont think there was but i never really checked. one other thing i noticed with the gsr is that the oil smells like gas. Is this another symptom of catastrophic failure? Im not too worried about the GSR because im rebuilding it (just need rod bolts, head studs, and oversized p30's before i can start my rebuild. See link if you want standard p30's ) Im really just worried about my pops car and i am curious about this problem.

CIVIC
I got code 74 so i replaced that plug and that wire. The car got a new cap rotor and ignitor about 3000 miles ago. I reseted the ecu so now i will wait and see what happens.
GSR
I am the third owner of the car and i bought it at 113k. Its now at 125k and i yet to change the cap, rotor, or fuel filter. The second owner said it was done before i bought the car so i didnt think i would need to do it. The owners manual says that timing belt, water pump, tensioner, and spring were replaced at 90k. I should of asked for proof of that but i didnt. When the misfiring started happening i was at school and i drove my car back home (3hrs away). Im sure within that car ride home i messed something up. Reason why i say this is because i burned a butt load of oil on the way home. Before the misfires started occuring the blk smoke would come out of the exhaust at WOT. I just bought a new fuel pump, cap and rotor kit, timing belt kit, new plugs and plug wires.
