I was driving and the motor just quit (0 RPM), when I tried to restart, the car turned but wouldn't start. I went through the usual checking to see what happened (fuel pump & line, timing belt, fuses, dizzy, etc.) The timing belt was fine, but the dizzy wasn't turning, I guessed it was bad. Then I took off the valve cover to see if it was anything else, When I had the car try to start I looked at the camshaft, it was only turning over cylinder 1, not anywhere else. I have a stock 94 accord 2.2L, with no mods. Does this mean my camshaft broke?? Please HELP!

From what you've described, you pretty much nailed your own problem. You had someone else try to start the engine while you watched, right?

I've never heard of a camshaft snapping like that in a stock Accord engine, but I guess there's a first time for everything

BTW, if you did get it right, then you probably have valve/piston damage as well as I'm sure you're aware. If you're sure it's the camshaft, you're going to have to pull the head now and look for damage for sure. Sorry.

It can happen i have seen it a few times on hondas. Usually only on the older ones like mid 80s. When they go it usually destroys the whole head, because the cam bents the line bore that the shaft runs down. Can be re-machined , but cheaper to get a whole reman head and put it on. That also gets rid of the valves that are most likely bent.

So do I have to remachine my head? What would cause the cam to break like that to begin with? It's all stock and I don't race, so what would cause the cam to break like that??

I have seen that happen a lot when there was an oil problem and the cam seizes in the head and snaps.

well my oil light did come on about a day or two before the cam broke, I checked my oil and it was full. This repair is going to cost me quite a bit.

you most likely had an oil passage clogged, or something along those lines...if your cam broke, then you may be dealing with more than just machining...you most likely will need a new head, or remachined head, along with most other parts of your valve train...they go on ebay for cheap though...other causes of cams breaking are hitting the rev limiter or over revving the engine to where the cam was spinning too fast for its own strength...can you physically see a break/crack in the cam? is the entire thing spinning?

The cam only spins up to the first cam holder (which I'm guessing where the break is, and I can't see the actual break), the rest of the cam doesn't move at all.
