Default 3rd - 4th gear syncro repair. How much did it cost?

I'm about 5 hours from buying #01-213. I'm getting a hell of a deal mainly because of the infamous 3rd gear grind the car has. It won't even engage into 3rd. As soon as you try to shift into 3rd, it grinds and then pops back out. After I get the car, I'm going to try adding some GM Syncromesh with the Friction Modified additive. Although I doubt it will fix the problem, it's worth a shot.

I've been reading through the archives all morning on this topic, so here are my questions that haven't been answered:

I guess the worst case scenario is that I will have to get the 3rd and 4th gear syncros replaced. For those who have gone through this, what did it cost for the parts? How much/long was labor?

syncromesh will just mess up all your other syncros.....sure it will shift great for 5, 10 thousand km...then you might be looking at bigger problems.......just get it fixed right the first time

I got a price awhile back. $180 for the 3-4th synco set thru Acura. Never got a price on labor, I was going to do it myself. I would guess $300-$400 labor if you drove it to a shop.

Parts = ~$180-$190 (IIRC) for the kit.

I fixed #01-0160 myself and will be installing a set in my car (#01-0154) when I crack the case open after the expo.

It took about 2 hours once the tranny was out of the car.

You near Blacksburg?

I've never heard this before. Why would syncromesh mess anything up?

Its much thinner than Honda MTF, which is already too thin and shear-happy IMO.

For street use its fine though (Honda).

the GM synchromesh is a good band aid fix for the time being. It took away my 1st and 3rd gear grind completely. But as RJ said, its probably not good in the long run because its very thin. Works great for now though

Yeah, I had planned on just using it temporarily until I actually get the syncros fixed.

I never knew synchromesh was thinner. I can't believe so many people were hyping it up for a while then. I use a thicker fluid in my tranny that I still have yet to see many people try. I use Redline Lightweight Shockproof, (much better than redline MTF)

i got mine fixed for free from acura. try to use the excuse that warranty should pay for it... the great thing about my story is that my warranty was expired so i used the goodwill service line on them. i told them my car has 17,000 miles on it and this should not happen. so they fixed my 2nd to 3rd gear grind..

Internal tranny work costs around 500.00 for labor + parts.

Internet bandwagon.

I use Motul Gear 300, its a 75w90. Redline's website didnt seem to recommend the shockproof on a synchro gearbox ("dog-ring type, generally not sycro application ") so I never thought to give it a try. Some people mix the shockproof with MTF or MT-90 though.

hmmmmmmm......I just checked the redline site and you are right it says its not recommended for MOST synchro applications (it used to not say this on the site dammit ). Which is wierd as I used it as a recommendation from one of the local honda gurus who swears by it, and have been using it for the last 20,000 miles without problems Shifts are very smooth with the fluid but on winter days, shifts can be super notchy since the fluid has more viscocity than hondas fluid and viscous fluids and cold weather don't always mix. I have been thinking about going back to honda MTF anyway because allthough the redline works fantastic, I'm interested what it will feel like now that Ive used a different fluid to go back to OEM, plus that on cold days, the notchyness gets irritating as hell.

Anyway, just a FYI, My 97' ITR has 66,000 miles and not a hint of a grind in the tranny YET
