Nvm. Apparently that's a mechanical fuel pump! Anyone have ideas on how to check if it's still good?

First off, hello. I'm new to the forum. Second, I'm sorry for reviving this thread, but in the image provided of a carb'd d13, what is that part on the upper left hand side of the engine valve cover...
