If it's a valve clearance issue buy some octane boost and run it through the system. If that helps your situation then you know it's valves.

Do you have a 12 volt test light? Do you have power at the fuses?

Did the mechanic show you where the wiring was messed with? This problem that you are having may have been happening to someone...
