NO not if the intake gasket is leaking. Or if the exhaust gasket was leaking. First car wouldn't run right like a big vacuum leak and the second would make it loud.

40psi at idle sounds a bit high to me however I really dont know much about the '86's. Other than regular oil changes I dont think I have even been under the hood of one that old..
