Re: Mild before stainless

You can just use the stainless pieces for mockup... Then just break it apart to make changes. Honestly the material cost isnt even worth the effort of making a manifold twice.

Re: 1986-1991 Rx7 turbo manifold kit.

I'm going to do some more research on stainless and get back to this, don't want to say anything stupid haha. I work at a machine shop where we send out stainless parts regularly for heat treating....

Re: 1986-1991 Rx7 turbo manifold kit.

Ever drilled a piece of stainless and put too much heat into it? It becomes super hard on the surface right?

Re: 1986-1991 Rx7 turbo manifold kit.

I agree with some of that, but welding too had can indeed heat treat the metal and harden it. Regardless of gas coverage the metal is still reaching a certain temp then cooling very quickly. This is...

Re: 1986-1991 Rx7 turbo manifold kit.

not sure how the thickness of a metal effects its ability to hold strength at temps... stainless melts just over 2700 degrees, dont think 1600 is a problem. cracking can be from a number of things...

Re: 1986-1991 Rx7 turbo manifold kit.

All of my rotary manifolds are sch10, who are you refering to as all?

Also still see those wastegates getting very heat soaked in that position. Regardless the welding looks good.

Re: 1986-1991 Rx7 turbo manifold kit.

No potential issues with wastegate diaphram failures from sitting the heads of the wastegates right on top of the runners?

Re: anyone know what alloy the valve cover, block, head are made of on a Honda?

^^^^

Agreed, after good prep I've never had any issues welding any Honda alluminum parts. Always used 4043 filler.

Re: Professional opinion needed: vband wastegate failure

S2000s also have very bad harmonics around cruising rpm 3-4k. You can literally hold the engine at that rpm and watch the whole turbo setup shake itself apart. Not gonna lie, the only two manifold...

Re: What to do when its time to weld the runners to the collector?

To reduce the possible problems associated with welding the runners, I actually will completely weld each runner before starting the next one. This basically reduces the problem to one runner at a...

Re: My first turbo manifold !!

Tips:

get a wire wheel or something to clean up the surfaces before welding.
Use less heat or try to get better gas coverage and make sure to stop between passes while staying in that coverage...

Re: What to do when its time to weld the runners to the collector?

disagree whole heartedly about welding runners in the fixture. Holding the ends builds up stresses in the runners that can cause problems later. I usually just tack each joint in at least 8-10 places...

Re: My first turbo manifold !!

Do you want real critiquing or just high fives?

Welding looks too hot, undercut and not prepped very well.

But it's a great job for your first time *high five*

Re: What to do when its time to weld the runners to the collector?

That's the fun part of making manifolds. You have to first decide when all 4 are tacked on which would be the easiest to get to, then weld that one last. Then get creative with your tungsten and pull...

Re: tranny

I have few friends using fc trannys for professional drifting. They don't really seem to last much more than a few races. Both cars I know are around 450hp. One is even running an aftermarket gearset...

Re: **Official Drift Chat**

why is it dumb?

I have competed 4 years in formula d and d1 using only welded diffs. Just changed to a kaaz diff this year as they are a new sponsor but would still be welded if not. Yes LSD is...

Re: quick question for h-t fabbers

Only problem I find with bending tungsten is that's it's very hard to resharpen it after the shank is bent. And if you have some super tight spot and a bent tungsten, chances are you will need to...

Re: Custom Sidewinder Manifold, 6262SP Build S2000

If you're refering to the dark weld at the base of the collector it's from welding the inside of that joint after welding the outside. It just loses it's color from the lack of argon on the outside....
