Well it hasn't happened since so I guess it's not an issue. The engine must have overheated...

They don't exactly "spring" they're solid units... but that sounds plausible. I don't see any place for them to come from on the crank.

The motor needs alternator, distributer, water pump and all together a full tune-up but it's within the realm of repair.
