It's not a gear issue. It sounded like you have a bad Master cylinder or a leaking slave cylinder.

Yeah those headlights will definitely not fit due to the differences in body style but I'm sure you can do a front end conversion to a 5th gen...I'm not sure how it will look though.

Your problem could more than likely be the ignition switch. If the contacts within the ignition switch get wet it would cause a slight ark and short everything out within the ignition switch system....
