Re: Bad gas mileage; 08 civic Si

Again, for everyone: When trying to diagnose a fuel economy problem you need to calculate your fuel economy more precisely and not talk about "XX miles on about 1/3 of a tank of fuel."

For those...

Re: Redline MTL, Honda MTF, or GM/ACDelco Synchromesh Fluid?

Guys, just keep in mind when selecting a syncro fluid, it's not just a matter of brands (additive chemistry) but also a matter of weight. Syncro fluids go from ATF-thin stuff all the way up to 90...

Re: Recommendation of Oil (Kidnkorner)

I'll add to what KidnKorner said. Synthetic oil often gives you the slightest edge in economy ... but it's not because of magic, it is due to weight (viscosity) Mobil 1 (the most popular synthetic)...

Re: (irnhyd889)

Guys, mixing brands is safe.

Now, there are different types of additive packages that don't necessarily work perfectly together so if you think you are improving a formula by mixing, you are...

Re: (k20kid24)

I'm a BITOGian and have seen PROBABLY A THOUSAND UOAs (lab tests of oil).

I have not found an oil that is consistently and significantly better than all the rest but I've noticed some trends over...

Re: Factory motor oil for '08 Civic SI? (EK FLY)

Guys, years ago Honda made a big deal about leaving their factory oil in for a certain amount of time (something like 5,000 miles) before the first change.

But when I bought my 2006, they (the...

Re: Factory motor oil for '08 Civic SI? (2008fijibluesi)

"In oil or in fuel, they are still a waste of money."

This statement is based on ???

Some of the upper cylinder lubes can increase fuel economy ... at least a few percent. I know because I...

Re: Factory motor oil for '08 Civic SI? (2008fijibluesi)

I rarely suggest putting additives in the oil. In this case, your owners' manual is correct and they are a waste of money. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthdown.gif

But in the...

Re: Recommendation of Oil (draken187)

There are no bad brands of oil that are SAE approved/certified.

I recommend you stay away from overpriced oils like Red Line that haven't proven to be worth the extra expense ... as well as silly...

Re: Factory motor oil for '08 Civic SI? (Bulli Kid)

I've never had an oil burner for a car ... even my '06 Civic with it's thin 5W-20 oil goes 5,000 miles without me having to add a drop. So, I'd say this car ... and the handful I owned before it ......

Re: synchromesh - good or bad (Perfectionist)

Perfectionist, I think you areconfusing the GM limited slip additive with the GM (and Chrysler and Pennzoil) syncromesh manual transmission fluids.

The syncromesh fluids are significantly lighter...

Re: (WILD_WILL)

WILD WILL makes a good point. 0.1 of a quart is 3 ounces (actually 3.2 ounces). Does anyone think (seriously) that underfilling or overfilling your top level (top of the cross-hatched area) by 3...

Wow. Some people still believe the old myths about synthetic oil? I was hoping these would have died off in the last decade but ... *sigh* ... I see they haven't. ...

Re: Squeal like a pig for me! (Bror Jace)

I'm not sure what it was ... but it's gone. A midnight test drive last night took care of that. I don't think I went more than 1 mile before the sound went away.

It must have been a bit of metal...

Re: Squeal like a pig for me!

I came home from work yesterday and my '06 (with less than 14K miles on it) was squealing like the brakes were wore down to the indicators (passenger front wheel). It was late (and dark) and I...

Re: (nholmes)

The Pennzoil, GM and Chrysler syncromesh fluids are too thin for Honda trannies. They are about a cSt of 9.0-9.5 while Hondas call for a cSt of 11.5.

Royal Purple Syncromax is Waaaaay too thin at...

Re: Tranny Oil Question (mmuller)

True, but 80 weight gear oil spans quite a range. The following chart shows that an 80 weight gear oil could be anywhere from 7.0 to 10.5 cSt.

Re: Tranny Oil Question (b17eghatch)

Gawd!!

The GM/Chrysler/Pennzoil syncromesh fluids are significantly thinner than the 10W-30, Honda MTF or GL4 75W-85 recommended for these trannies. Don't use them.
