Did you use a 12pt or 6pt socket? 12pt will strip it almost every time, try a 6pt if you haven't all ready.

Because the distributor is attached to the end of the intake camshaft any changes made to the gear will change the ign timing as well. You need to adjust it everytime you make an intake gear change....

No just +3 degrees. I know some cam gears adjust in 2deg increments, so use 1.5 marks on the gear to get 3 degrees.

Can you hit the gas up in the rpms without a problem? If yes, check the fuel pressure regulator. If the fuel pressure isn't dropping at idle, it might idle but when you hit it, pressure is too high...
